New feature: Fundraise for a group or charity in Quidclans

November 13th, 2008

We're taking the wraps off a new feature so you can all help us test it out before we make it fully live.

Over the years we have had loads of requests for members asking for the ability to donate part of their earnings to a cause they are involved in. We wanted to do something more powerful than simply adding a "donate" option so we have taken a lot of member feedback and developed a new addition to the Quidclans.

The fundraising feature enables any Quidclan to start raising money to a cause they believe in. The Quidclan admin can set a fundraising target, beneficiary organisation, fundraising info and then any member of that Quidclan can pledge their earnings to the fundraiser.

This means that if you have a group that needs to raise some money you can start a Quidclan fundraiser and have them generate money for the fundraiser when shopping through Quidco. In these "credit crunch" days this opens up a whole new avenue of raising money for your cause that doesn't hit people in the wallet.

So how can you help right now? We've done our testing on our end but there always seem to be bugs that pop up! If you have some time please wander over to Quidclans and check out a clan with a fundraiser (if someone has added a fundraiser to their clan it will have a special target symbol in the listings) or try starting your own! Please post any bugs, suggestions or problems in the comments below so we can get cracking on them!

Thanks to all the members who have been sending in suggestions and comments to us over the years on this idea! We're happy we've finally been able to get it live :)

Derbyshire,Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance

Please donate to a realy good cause.

Thanks
Adrian

ABOUT DLRAA Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance (DLRAA) based at East Midlands Airport is a new air ambulance service which took over from County Air Ambulance on 1 April 2008. Plans are underway to provide the new service and fundraising has begun to raise the £1.5 million needed to run the service each year. The new service will move the emphasis away from simply transporting casualties to hospital, to getting senior doctors and consultants to the scene of incidents as quickly as possible. DLRAA will convey its patients to specialist hospitals that can help specific injuries, not just the nearest hospital. DLRAA will provide life saving treatment and medication on site and en-route to hospital. This is an invaluable service in cases where land ambulances are unable to access the scene or where transfer by land ambulance would be too slow or create more injury to the patient. DLRAA's primary response area is the 2,100 square miles of Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland. It will serve in excess of 1.4 million people. It is your local air ambulance, please support it.

What I was hoping for is the ability to put banner ads on a fund-raising website so users just click through and go direct to the earning site rather than going via QuidCo. A coded tracked banner ad where the website earns commission/cashback for what all its users click through to and buy.
The requirement to register in QuidCo limits the usefulness.

Still the best cashback site to date!

What happens about the "giftaid" for the charity? if you donate a personal contribution the charity would be able to reclaim 20% tax. If quidco makes the donation as an organisation I don't think that this is possible? Therefore it is financially better for the charity, if you receive the cashback then make a personal contribution.

One comment on the donations interface - I wouldn't have the button to to close the popup and the button to cancel the donation both called 'Close' - it's already caught me out.

Quidco,

I think what you have said needs to be stated on each donation page to reasure people that dont read what you have said.

Ty Hafan Chilsrens Hospice in Wales added today.. well giving it a go!

I wondered how the monies would be paid but once you add the registered charity number the donations go directly to that cause rather than the individual. Well done Quidco!

More of a feature suggestion, but it wold be nice to to have the title of the charity that we are collecting for on the main page of the quidclan by the target meter, or even the optional image to be displayed.

Thanks for the feedback!

In regards to your security concerns. There's two types of fundraisers and the payment works differently for each:

1. Fundraising for a registered charity. In this case Quidco makes the payment to the registered charity and ensures it is paid appropriately to that charity. There's no chance of abuse here unless someone has fraudulently registered a charity. When someone sets up a fundraiser and says it is for a charity they have to provide the charity ID number etc so we ensure it is registered in the UK charity database.

2. Fundraising for a group or non-registered charity. In this case the fundraiser admin enters the payment details and contact info for the donations. These details are displayed publicly. It is up to members to ensure they trust and know the person who is organising the fundraiser and that the payment details are legitimate. If you are not sure you can contact that fundraiser admin with the contact details to ask. We are guessing this option will be used by people who know each other and that members won't be giving randomly to a cause they don't know.

Although a great idea, it does worry me that it would be open to abuse. On another cashback site with forums, somebody ran a charity auction with the money raised going to a children's hospital.

However, the guy ended up doing a runner with the money - a few hundred pounds from what I can remember.

I know not everyone's like that, but if it did happen here I can imagine it could cause a lot of ill will. Is there any way of tying this in with Just Giving?

Blakely November 13th, 2008 a 02:11 pm

So does my Quidclan, Hotmail Quidclan. Given to Marie Curie, I have donated, please everyone, DONATE!!

norstar November 13th, 2008 a 01:15 pm

I dont see whats stopping abuse of this. Seems a bit odd asking for people to pay money into your own bank account. How do we know where its really going??

coollittlew November 13th, 2008 a 12:32 pm

Our quidclan "Quidco's current no spend offers" Has the charity feature enabled. We have a target of £100 to raise for Barnardo's by the end of this year and have already received a couple of donations. I think this is a great idea!
