New guy at Quidco .....

April 25th, 2009

As you all know we've been growing pretty fast here at Quidco with lots of new people joining the team. We've been trying our best to keep up with all the new Quidco'ers joining while still improving our level of support and sourcing even better offers from Quidco merchants.

So we're pretty excited to now have Michael Murphy jumping on board as Executive Chairman.

Michael was previously CEO of Friends Reunited and before that he was COO at the FT. He's got some pretty hefty experience in managing large scale sites and we think he's really going to help Quidco get bigger and better for all of us.

It's pretty crazy to look back to when Quidco started almost four years ago and see how much its grown to get to this point. We remember launching and how we were getting slammed by people who said having a site that was passing back 100% advertising commission, not selling member details, not advertising on the site, would fail very quickly! So it's funny that not only has Quidco grown so busy we need people like Michael to help out, but also that the Quidco idea has become normal :)

The huge growth of Quidco and the way it is changing the way merchants treat consumers is down to all you Quidco'ers who have believed in the idea and hung in there with us through ups and downs. We think there's still a huge amount of work to do to make the site even better for Quidco'ers which is why we're excited to have Michael coming on board.

So onwards and upwards! And as ever, keep on Quidco'ing... :)

You must to post a comment.

Hi, welcome to Quidco.

Indianna May 1st, 2009 a 11:23 am

Welcome to Quidco Michael - all I request is that you do not tamper with a successful business model that is Quidco [.....passing back 100% advertising commission, not selling member details, not advertising on the site]. Sometimes a change of leadership leads to a change of direction which ultimately leads to loss of members and failure. LONG LIVE QUIDCO!

Welcome Michael,I am sure that during this recession, you will be inundated with new members, seeking to stretch their money,by visiting Cash-back sites that offer value for money.
Quidco certainly falls into that bracket, just a pity some merchants seem to drag their feet, but if we eventually receive our Cash-back,why worry ?
On a final note, can I just thank your superb team of Stephen, and the rest of the Quidco team, for their rapid responses when dealing with the many enquiries I have questioned these last 18 Months.

Re comment from Jules - Quidco Community Support Manager.
Jules, you start your post talking about late payments and then talk about the fact that you're updating systems and processes to cope with growing membership and taking a deeper look at how the whole cashback process works. That's all fine and commendable, but you seem to be intimating that the late payment problems lie within Quidco. If that's the case, that is not what I have been told by Quidco in relation to my own late payment query. I also don't believe it to be the case. I have one example of a cashback of £105 that was tracked, validated and paid to me within 6 weeks, even before my credit card bill arrived!!That's pretty damned efficient in my book! Can't we just be honest and say that some merchants are not sticking to their side of the deal and need a major kick where it hurts? So can you give some clarity on late payments please. Is it the merchants that are not paying up or is it quidco maladministration? I really need to know which it is please. Regards, John

apertama April 29th, 2009 a 08:25 am

Correct me if I am wrong.
Although quidco gives 100% of cashback of a particular transaction, I think they receive cashback bonus on top of what we are getting. (some kind of marketing bonus?) So, they are making a good amount as well. And £ 5 a year is great if you have 500K members - and the overhead is just people. (they dont need to have stocks, big warehouses, etc). Still.. long live quidco!

It would be a great idea if Quidco started doing customer feedbacks under each merchant. This would greatly help to identify the bad merchants and would also help new users.

rooban April 28th, 2009 a 07:51 pm

JILL9063 - You should be able to get some cashback on a new keyboard if you ever want to sort out your sticky CAPS lock issue :)

Welcome

I am new Quidco, and have to say I am a little disappointed so far, although 2 small items have been tracked, both a large and a medium purchase have not. It appears using Quidco is a little bit hit and miss regarding some merchants paying their dues. Its a great idea, but there needs to be some control over the offenders who get the benefit but do not comply to your terms.

Good luck

We appreciate that some of you have very valid concerns around late payments etc. We are working hard at the moment, looking at streamlining our processes and updating our systems in order to cope with the ever-increasing numbers of members joining us. Having Michael on board will also enable us to look deeper into the way in the whole cashback process works, including the parts the merchants and networks play. Our members are, and always will be, our main concern, and your ongoing support and feedback are invaluable to us.

I agree with the late payment posts. There seems to big a big problem with this at the moment. Merchants seem to have too much power declining and withholding genuine payments - If customers withheld payments from merchants all hell would break loose and you would probably get the heavys round knocking on your door - I don't see why it should be any different the other way round when you look at it as black and white as that.

barnabee April 27th, 2009 a 06:01 pm

Welcome Michael. There must be a reason for a big name to join Quidco. The word is that cashback sites will become mainstream in the UK so Quidco will face much stiffer competition. I hope Quidco will as a result become far more customer focused. I remember writing the below comments to NMA regarding this:

A great many Quidco members feel cheated when genuine transactions they have made are not paid out within an advertised average time frame or not at all. This is prevalent in the purchase of financial products, gambling and mobile phone contracts.

There is little recourse for customers who have valid transactions declined by merchants.
The feeling on the ground is cashback sites and affiliate networks need to clean up their act and communicate with their customers in a more open and honest way.

JohnPollard April 27th, 2009 a 05:40 pm

Welcome Michael. I echo the comments of Mark3270 above. My situation is identical to his - I could written exactly the same comments! Need to get a grip with non/slow paying merchants. Otherwise don't try to fix what aint broke!!

Jay37 April 27th, 2009 a 03:45 pm

welcome Michael! & Congratulations on your new post!!!

Paul2Knapp April 27th, 2009 a 03:25 pm

So Michael how much was your buy in then?

Mark3270 April 27th, 2009 a 03:21 pm

Welcome Michael ...

Quidco (for me) anyway has been excellent - prompt replies from the staff when queries have been raised.

One area that definitely needs looking at though (and I'm sure that others will also comment regarding this) is the slow/late paying and non paying merchants in the Insurance industry ... they seem to be the worst merchants that Quidco have on-board.

In my case I'm referring to a policy I took out with eSure last August (2008) ... with a promised £75 cashback. 9 months later I'm still waiting .... your support staff have told me they are chasing it daily, but someone needs to sort them (the insurance companies - not Quidco) out ...

Cheers

Mark

So he was at Friends Reunited when every left in droves to go to Facebook, so good experience for fighting off TopCashBack LOL

Good luck with your new post.

bongofury April 27th, 2009 a 12:25 pm

Great news, although I'm a bit concerned at the comments in Metro that suggested Michael wants Quidco to become a household name. Thats great, as long as the customer service remains as good as it is now. Don't grow too big, too quickly! Good luck:)

phoenix2k April 27th, 2009 a 10:48 am

I love quidco I do.. £568.00 and counting... ;)

highfellsdrifter April 27th, 2009 a 09:15 am

Welcome, Michael, and may your association with Quidco be long and fruitful.

Quidco is a godsend to folks on a tight budget - the trickle of funds back into the bank account can make all the difference.

MrRobin April 27th, 2009 a 08:04 am

Just read about this in this morning's Metro paper. Welcome Michael, I look forward to seeing what contributions you can bring to the Quidco community.

dashall April 27th, 2009 a 07:25 am

to be honest i never realised you gave back 100%, only taking the £5 a year. I wouldn't be concerned at all if you took a %age of the income received - business survival is more important - otherwise we'd be left with no quidco whatsoever. better to have 80% of something than 100% of nothing....

cposkitt April 27th, 2009 a 12:27 am

Thanks for the reassurance Michael and best of luck!

sds1493 April 26th, 2009 a 05:12 pm

Welcome Michael, and thanks for being so involved already, and replying to us.

michaelmurphy April 26th, 2009 a 03:52 pm

Hi fellow Quidcoers - thanks for your welcomes and feedback - it is much appreciated.

As for the concern that a few of you have raised about continuing the ethos of the site - please be assured that I am just part of the senior team and that from what I know of Paul and Jen already, wild horses couldnt get them to corrupt their principles! - plus I know the sites integrity is one of the things that make it so great - so just expect more of the same - a lot more I hope...

And as for Quidco going all corporate - one of the things I learnt from Corporate life is how good it was at stifling innovation and simply making coming to work a chore - so please see my experience in part as having learnt what not to do with young companies that have lots of potential.

But - words are cheap, so I will be checking into the blog regularly to check you guys think I am being true to my words

Best

Michael

mushimushtaq April 26th, 2009 a 01:41 pm

wellcome Michael!

ChiaPet April 26th, 2009 a 01:10 pm

Like EssexGenius, I'm wondering about how this might affect Quidco's ethos. I really like that Quidco seems more open and genuine and less corporate than many other website-businesses. I would really hate to see Quidco develop more of a corporate feel and/or start rolling out unneeded initiatives and changes with which Mr. Murphy can be "personally associated" a la New Labour. Please don't try to fix what isn't broken!

To comment on what Rooban has said - I personally prefer Quidco and am quite happy to pay 5 pounds a year to use it instead of Topcashback. (Although I do use Topcashback for merchants which aren't on Quidco).

Issey April 26th, 2009 a 01:04 pm

Welcome to Quidco Michael!

EssexGenius April 26th, 2009 a 10:13 am

Interesting news - how does this affect the ethos of the site?

According to the Telegraph, this is a management buy-in with Mr Murphy injecting capital into the business. Presumably he will be looking for a financial return on his investment?

The "About Quidco" page states:

"Quidco is the web's cashback cooperative. Quidco collects referral commissions from online merchants and passes them all on to our members."

Are there plans for this to change?

CopperPlate April 26th, 2009 a 10:04 am

Good news - it's even made the Telegraph too! Here's to the future.

namildog April 26th, 2009 a 09:34 am

Welcome Michael - it is always good to have someone with a real nose for good business at the helm. Here's hoping your experience will make Quidco the only cashback site for the majority andmake loads of money for Quidco, me and all quidco-ers.

rooban April 26th, 2009 a 08:37 am

Welcome in Michael and hope you can bring in more business for US and Quidco. Is there any possibility of you getting more daily click sites and banking sites? You may also want to have a look at sites like Topcashback who don't charge any fee, give you 100% cashback like Quidco and on top of that a bonus of up to 10% on top of that cash back. Can you do that here in Quidco?

PINKY8 April 26th, 2009 a 08:28 am
