Savvvvy tip: do what you do and did what you did.

bubblerock May 22nd, 2009 a 07:28 pm

My tip - don't go TOO big unless you have the space - huge TV's in poxy rooms look naff!

irthove May 22nd, 2009 a 05:36 pm

Aleays remember to get some decent cables - otherwise you are just wasting your money on top end TV's

suememoon May 22nd, 2009 a 02:42 pm

My Savvy Tip is - remember to buy a separate Freeview box for your NEC MultiSync LCD6520L from Dell - it doesn't come with a tuner built-in

suememoon May 22nd, 2009 a 02:38 pm

My savy tip is: Why not just sell the house and take out a mortgage instead on a NEC MultiSync LCD6520L - 65" LCD flat panel display - widescreen - 1080p (FullHD) black from Dell...this screen really rocks and you will get £651 cashback via Quidco!

McMichaeli May 22nd, 2009 a 01:19 pm

Check whichever model you buy that you can disable overscan when viewing via HDMI. All Sharp models support this and hence allow you to see the whole picture from your connected equipment rather than cropping 5-10% off the edges. If you'd got HD, why not see all of it?!

Skippysackett May 22nd, 2009 a 12:47 pm

My savy tip is Sharp LC 32DH77E - 32" Aquos LCD TV - 100Hz - widescreen - 1080p (FullHD) - HD ready 1080p - the best TV for that price on the market!!!

nortoang May 22nd, 2009 a 12:41 pm

Consider Samsung as a brand. They get great reviews are very stylish and good value for money, everything we have in our home from this manufacturer has been very reliable and now we are great fans - and no i don't work for them!

hoppy2 May 22nd, 2009 a 12:10 pm

My tip is - don't get fooled into buying full HD (or any HD in faCT) if you won't be using it! make sure your source(s) is/are HD or there's no point. E.g. Sky/BBC/ITV HD programs are in 1080i and NOT 1080p so if you don't have a 1080p HD DVD or gaming console you don't need 1080p on your TV......unless you want it for the future, just in case!

kulrajpurewal May 22nd, 2009 a 11:30 am

When buying a new TV consider the signal source that is supplying your TV. There is no point buying a 52" TV and watching a pixellated image from a satellite TV channel. Invest in HD equipment, eg blueray, if you can to get the full benefit.

brij_bharati May 22nd, 2009 a 10:49 am

Samsung
SM400CX 40" LCD IDTV Freeview DVB Tuner , best value for money and superb Samsung quality.

ralf1701 May 22nd, 2009 a 09:24 am

You can use the cardboard box that your television comes in to help house your MP as a second home.

ttruscott May 22nd, 2009 a 08:32 am

Get a reasonably sized TV. As inches increase, you pay for an exponentially increasing number of pixels.

crukedeye May 22nd, 2009 a 02:01 am

winning a brand new > buying it with hard earned cash, esp if its sony

newley83 May 21st, 2009 a 11:37 pm

Sonys cost more but they last longer and are more intuitive and user-friendly products on average.

vkanth May 21st, 2009 a 10:26 pm

Dont forget to get a matching stand or wallmount with the TV

ruthw1 May 21st, 2009 a 07:55 pm

I've been told by an expert to definately pick a 1080. I'm just waiting for something to happen to my old tv to be able to treat myself to a nice shiny new one.

lindamatthews May 21st, 2009 a 07:50 pm

Size matters

kingpieandy May 21st, 2009 a 07:48 pm

Buy as big as possible, then your other half cannot justify watching soaps on it as it is blantantly designed for sports and films!

kaywatson May 21st, 2009 a 06:12 pm

Size isn't every thing -it's what you do with it that counts!!!!

billposters May 21st, 2009 a 06:11 pm

My savvy tip is buy the biggest tv you can - reduce the wall area that you need to buy paint for, and if you are optically challenged then you might not need to spend money on glasses in order to see the screen!!!

seriously buy the appropriate tv for the size of your room... for once big isn't always best

dickuk May 21st, 2009 a 05:09 pm

Tip : Sharp LC 42DH77E - 42" Aquos LCD TV - 100Hz - widescreen - 1080p (FullHD) - HDTV 1080p - Great looking tv

maxsurf May 21st, 2009 a 04:43 pm

m4tt May 21st, 2009 a 02:47 pm

My tip is forget boring black go for a Sharp LC 19D1ERD in bright red for your bedroom. Small, hot and beautifully formed!

wolfey1975 May 21st, 2009 a 12:05 pm

Make sure you buy a bigger and better LCD TV than all of your mates so you can have bragging rights in the pub. Then when they out do you buy another and put it in the kids room for the X-Box. Hmmmm sounds familiar.

mizzy2 May 21st, 2009 a 11:51 am

Savvy tip: remember to buy a tv license as well! Otherwise the lovely tv you have just bought cant be used!

Ayrcomm May 21st, 2009 a 11:50 am

HUNTERMAD156 May 21st, 2009 a 10:09 am

My tip-to have a wife that says "You don't need to get a bigger telly as the one we have got works fine"- so I'm stuck with a very old 20" samsung telly with the large back at the back. My computer monitor is bigger than my telly. :(

doubleG May 21st, 2009 a 09:49 am

My tip: Put your money where the TV. Don't waste your money with places that charge shipping. (And the hook it up to a great sound system and it's like you're at the cinema).

pup May 21st, 2009 a 09:21 am

My tip - make sure you turn your TV off standby when you go to bed to save on your power bills!

soniad May 21st, 2009 a 08:30 am

My Tip - never leave it on stand by - turn it off - saving money and the enviroment :)

smilie242 May 21st, 2009 a 07:10 am

My top tip - in a bedroom which is decorated in beige/light brown, dont buy a TV which will look out of place in black or silver, get the The LC19D1EBK is a 19 inch HD Ready LCD TV with integrated Freeview which is a glossy white colour - gorgeous and only £220.24 with free delivery!

geoffscott May 21st, 2009 a 05:16 am

My tip is to always read a professional review of your chosen telly and remember to check out the date of the review....a 5* review for a 2006 telly is not the same as a 5* review for a 2009 telly as technology moves on so quickly. Try the following sites...
cnet.co.uk/televisions or www.testfreaks.com/televisions.

potnoodle2 May 21st, 2009 a 02:44 am

my tip is...don't buy one...win one from Quidco ;)

wyattaw May 20th, 2009 a 10:07 pm

My tip: You need to hang it on the wall and get some surround sound speakers to get the ultimate cinema experience.

Bumface May 20th, 2009 a 09:56 pm

make sure you plug it in before watching it

Rutlandscapes May 20th, 2009 a 09:55 pm

my savvy tip is, after you have bought your TV from Dell, to get a satellite box and small dish that lets you watch hundreds of free-to-air digital European channels. Sky+ HD is great but if you are recording 2 programmes at once on the Sky box or are bored with terrestrial Freeview and your dvd collection then it's nice to watch something different, learn a foreign language or see what passes for entertainment in other countries.

StormB May 20th, 2009 a 09:30 pm

My savvy tip - make sure your TV has digital built in - the analogue-only receivers will be useless shortly, and you'll end up needing to buy a separate digital receiver!

cbabbs1987 May 20th, 2009 a 09:27 pm

Savvy tip: Make sure you measure the space your tv has to go in to before you buy it, else major house alterations may be neccessary when you get it home!

rachelhill1973 May 20th, 2009 a 09:06 pm

Well that Sony TV would look great in my lounge, would have to get sky hd then too!!!!

pppenguin May 20th, 2009 a 09:02 pm

savvy tip: compatible... make sure the accessories are compatible with the device(s), the devices are compatible with each other and your TV and their compatibles are compatible with where they are place.

olehank May 20th, 2009 a 08:34 pm

Purchase a 1080p television if you can afford to as this will meet future requirements of true high definition, also buy a television with sufficient sockets at the back for your requirements ie sufficient hdmi connections, I would recommend Sony Bravia/Samsung televisions I find they have sharp pictures and a good colour range

petertheb May 20th, 2009 a 08:20 pm

Rent as you can go into lots of rental places and almost name your own price business is slow!

jeffkenny7469 May 20th, 2009 a 08:02 pm

Avoid the 720i TVs and go for a 1080p if you can afford it and future proof yourself!

wifeyt May 20th, 2009 a 08:02 pm

savvy tip

magicmat May 20th, 2009 a 07:20 pm

Sharp LC 52D65E - 52" Aquos LCD TV - widescreen - 1080p for only £1189.42.

Amazing bargain, and at this size, you need 1080p (my tip!). Plug your PS3 in, chuck on a blu ray, and enjoy the ultimate in home entertainment. Time for an upgrade I think!

zwarder May 20th, 2009 a 07:14 pm

Sharp LC 46D65E - 46" Aquos LCD TV - widescreen - 1080p (FullHD) - HD ready 1080p £810.69

I can get you this cheaper, if wish to know just ask, besides I could do with a new telly my 12 year old philips has gone daft this week.

1969JH May 20th, 2009 a 07:12 pm

Read all these comments first, there's a lot of good sense mixed in here !!
Suitable Screen Size.
Refresh Rates
100Hz
All more important than just 1080

Kev08 May 20th, 2009 a 07:11 pm

My tip is to be very patient when purchasing a TV and understand what it is you are buying. No point going for an all singing/dancing HD TV if you don't have the equipment to make the most of it.

activist3 May 20th, 2009 a 07:10 pm

My Tip-Sell your car and get this bad boy NEC MultiSync LCD6520L. 65inches of fun!

daevh May 20th, 2009 a 06:51 pm

Consider a better spec'd 32" HD-Ready TV over paying more for a 1080p model. At that size, it is very difficult to notice a difference with HD content unless you push your nose up against the screen. You may also find a 32" inch plasma looks a lot better than a 1080p LCD.

my tip: go for a Mini 10, Experience ultimate mobile freedom with lighter designs and long battery life.

skylinerob May 20th, 2009 a 05:46 pm

My tip: If you are buying a new tv spending a decent amount of money, then make sure its 1080p and not 720p, makes all the difference when gaming etc ;)

bruntmeister May 20th, 2009 a 05:43 pm

Futureproofyourself - get a 1080p - theyre soooo much better

harkin100 May 20th, 2009 a 05:25 pm

Unless you know you are going to have high def inputs such as HD games consoles, blu ray or free sat, a high quality 720p tv can often gives you a better picture than a cheaper 1080p tv using standard Dvd or freeview inputs.

8mhigh May 20th, 2009 a 05:09 pm

Visit a price comparison site to avoid TV prices as eyewatering as D**L!

freebies123 May 20th, 2009 a 01:23 pm

My tip is to buy the Logitech Harmony 785 remote as these are the best remotes I have ever used, great all in one remote you can use with the tv, ps3 and sky. If I won the lottery tomorrow, I would buy the Sony 70" Bravia 1080p for £4,483.55 from Dell's site, but I don't where I would put it:)

Suze2000 May 20th, 2009 a 01:21 pm

Savvy tip - All Dell TVs offer free shipping.

ukwiz May 20th, 2009 a 01:12 pm

dbidas May 20th, 2009 a 12:59 pm

JadeLD May 20th, 2009 a 12:43 pm

My tip would be to look the TVs with free delivery, like the Sony KDL-52Z4500 - 52" BRAVIA LCD TV. Think of how easy this would be compared to trying to carry a huge box to your car, struggle to get a TV this size into it and then fight through the traffic - totally worth getting it online if delivery is free!

ericfothergill May 20th, 2009 a 12:41 pm

Savvy Tip: Make sure you purchase your Dell TV via Quidco for even more savings!

msjl1969 May 20th, 2009 a 12:16 pm

Savvy Tip - make sure the TV has a digital receiver. Wont work soon if it hasn't

interceptor May 20th, 2009 a 11:44 am

My savvy tip : Don't spend vast amounts on premium HDMI cables. As it's a digital signal, there's no degradation, so spending a fortune just aint worth it. Dell have some good value cables for sale.

lollg76 May 20th, 2009 a 10:04 am

I was surprised to see the range of TV's Dell are selling as I expecting it to be own brand only, great to be able to compare lots of brands. Not all the images are loaded and not all the TV's have a rollover to help to see the spec. Most are discounted although not huge discounts. The grid format is useful to compare.

redted1977 May 20th, 2009 a 10:04 am

my tip is to order a nice 1080p HD sony bravia TV from DELL then tell the missus you won it in a quidco competition!! just hide the reciepts and dont have a joint bank account!!!

insomniak123 May 20th, 2009 a 09:28 am

my savvy tip is that while 65" sounds like an awesome TV, there's propbably better things you can spend 11 grand on :D

a better savvy tip is: do your own research and don't follow some poeples tips on here, namely: don't waste money on expensive HDMI cables, the cheaper the better, they either work or dont work, and plasma screens have long since evolved from the early models which suffered from burn-in

maso2273 May 20th, 2009 a 09:14 am

Remember, if you mount the tv on the wall make sure it is secure because it will be an expensive replacement if it falls off!

Pimblett May 20th, 2009 a 09:02 am

My savy tip is - don't mount the TV high on the wall when the on/off switch is on the top (most Sonys) the kids end up pulling it off the wall trying to turn it on

A 1080P screen is 1.5 times better than 720P, it's also 1.5 times more expensive. Moral of the story is, you get what you pay for....

chrismcdonald May 20th, 2009 a 07:13 am

Always go for LCD, as manufacturers have began to abandon Plasma TV altogether. Luckily for Dell (maybe their just ahead of the game), but all of their 1080p TV's are LCD.

LCD Picture quality is better than plasma and you don't get any "burn-in" when pausing TV for a long period of time with LCD too.

You will also save the plant by choosing LCD, as its power consumption is considerably less compared to a plasma, which are both around the same price mark anyways!

Hook it up to the new TV via HDMI, you can watch Blu-ray on the PS3 as well as play games, internet browsing, view your digital camera pictures, etc etc.

Perfect compliment when you win the Sony TV :)

lalamb May 19th, 2009 a 09:57 pm

LCD screens scratch really easily, so if you have young children then make sure you have the TV high up on the wall. Stops a lot of heart-ache!!

Jibe1978 May 19th, 2009 a 09:57 pm

Once you've chosen your set, try and negotiate a better price. And if you cannot get one, ask them to throw in a high quality HDMI cable

tryptase May 19th, 2009 a 08:53 pm

1080p is not really necessary on a 32" TV. I doubt you could see an improvement over 720p at normal viewing distance.

tomtomace May 19th, 2009 a 08:41 pm

My tip: think carefully about what you actually going to use your Television for, if you don't have any full HD sources don't waste your cash. Get an HD ready set like the Sony KDL-32S5500 for a steal at £539!

If you are going to wall mount your new tv, make sure the brackets are secured properly, especially if you have kids. It would be terrible to spend your hard earned cash on a top tv, only for the little darlings to pull it down.

Andrew May 19th, 2009 a 08:22 pm

Just leap in and don't spend forever waiting for the price to come down or something new to come out... you could be enjoying a big telly now!

My tip:

chr1sbean May 19th, 2009 a 08:08 pm

There are plenty of accessories there, so dont forget to buy the right leads! It's no good having the state of the art HD TV if you are still using dodgy scart cables!

lucas4 May 19th, 2009 a 07:55 pm

My Tip: If you want the best gaming experience get a 1080p monitor or tv and make sure it has 100hz technology. The moving images will be clearer and smoother, motion blur will be reduced and the picture will be very sharp and crystal clear because of the 1080p resolution. Hope this helps somebody :)

jucook May 19th, 2009 a 07:53 pm

carolemmett May 19th, 2009 a 07:34 pm

If you are upgrading from an old CRT, check out the measurements of the LCD in the next size up. Many sets have thin surrounds in addition to being so much thinner (and lighter). I upgraded my old 32" CRT for a 37" LCD which only has a slightly larger frontage!

mcmn18 May 19th, 2009 a 03:42 pm

Alot of people mentioning about whether it's 1080p or not, I always check the image contrast ratio as I've found this can make a big difference in colour quality so I would recommend checking both

jamesw23 May 19th, 2009 a 03:37 pm

Samsung 4 series, £390.94 inclusive of both VAT, AND DELIVERY! With your Quidco 6% (£23) thats a mere £367!

latecomer May 19th, 2009 a 03:33 pm

Savvy tip - Dont just the biggest, most expensive telly you can afford. Take time to figure out what suits your room. No point buying a 52" TV if you can only sit a maximum of 5 feet away from it - you wont be able to see the whole screen. Use paper or cardboard templates to get an idea of what it will look like in your room. :)

well Plasma never need to be regassed lol shame on you high street, and before you buy a big screen TV DEMO it first not all HDtvs are great at SD and thats the most you will use it for !!!. Dont be afriad to play with it as well as most shops will not have a TV set up properly. and remember a cheap HDMI will be as good an expensive cable afterall its digital !!! .. is 1080p really worth it only if you get a 42+ and remember nowhere in the world do the broadcast 1080P tv so its only good for HD movies or games.

Sharp LC 46D65E - 46" Aquos LCD TV - widescreen - 1080p is the SAVVIEST tip in the Tv section. My personal savvy tip would be NOT to purchase a HDMI cable that the sales agent or website may claim is "best" for your TV. Shop around online and you will save at least 75% of the rip off price!

oddoneout777 May 19th, 2009 a 02:29 pm

My tip; Always consult your other half before buying a new TV - you'll be surprised to learn that its not the Hz rate; pixelation; no. of input / output sockets that matter. Oh no, its the "softer" side of things; colour of the casing; the shape of the stand etc that really count.

APBould May 19th, 2009 a 12:34 pm

http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=uk&l=en&s=dhs&cs=ukdhs1&sku=A2549089 Full HD for less than £600, from a great e-tailor, it's never going to get any savvy-er then that! :D

aristeia May 19th, 2009 a 12:30 pm

When investing in something as long lasting and expensive as a TV be sure to go for quality of picture rather than price, spending £400+ on a TV only to find yourself unhappy with a blurred image during movements on screen is much worse than investing a little bit more.

Perhaps visiting a few local stores and selecting a tv based on what you like in there and then purchasing it cheaper online with quidco will make for a much happier customer.

Gemtastic May 19th, 2009 a 12:28 pm

Savvy tip: The more HDMI sockets the better, especially if you're a gamer and want to view movies from Blu Ray. The one advertised as the prize looks lovely! And don't forget your quidco - possibly the savviest tip of them all. :)

Tip - don't forget your HDMI cables and go for a home cinema system for that true surround sound experience.

ChrisTrew May 19th, 2009 a 11:03 am

If you ARE insisting on a wall mount don't put it too high (e.g. over a mantelpiece). You will be forever craning your neck. The screen should ideally be at eye level.

duzzar May 19th, 2009 a 10:36 am

My tip is Samsung is the most value for money and they are getting better.

AndrewVickers May 19th, 2009 a 10:33 am

My tip is don't spend a fortune on TVs or satellite. Use BBC iPlayer and 4 on demand. Then go and do something more interesting instead.

stupot42 May 19th, 2009 a 10:33 am

My Savvy tip: It's unlikely that a HD signal above 720p will be broadcast in the foreseeable future, so don't rule out the 720p TVs if you plan on watching mainly TV and less blu-ray movies. The 720p will be a lot cheaper and have great picture quality on SD and HD TV broadcasts.

pfiddler May 19th, 2009 a 09:56 am

My savvy tip is that when buying an HDMI cable to connect your blu-ray player or games console to your new HD tv, don't be tempted to spend a fortune on a so called "premium" cable, because as they are digital cables they are all the same, so save yourself some money - the cheaper the better!

Nobster May 19th, 2009 a 09:56 am

I would suggest when making a large purchase such as a new TV that you do your homework and find out as much as possible about the specific tele that you want. I always read reports, then look at the TV in the shops, and double check it fits in the space you've got; the best way of doing this is to join some newspaper together until you've got the size of your television then hang it where your new purchase will sit, this way you can see exactly how big it's going to look. Finally, I would then always buy online, the best offers and free delivery always seem to be online and this way you'll get cashback through Quidco.

javedkamruddin May 19th, 2009 a 09:49 am

My savvy tip: don't be tempted to spend more than you can afford to.

lovejoy1502 May 19th, 2009 a 09:47 am

warriorsith May 19th, 2009 a 09:10 am

My Savvy Tip is : The Tv's shown on the Dell website are of a good quality but it doesn't mean you have to incur a very high price to purchase one, choose a model that you like and spend a few minutes shopping around online see if you can get it cheaper else where and if you can see if there's a Cashback link via Quidco for that extra bonus.

jonniewices May 19th, 2009 a 08:24 am

kingpieandy May 19th, 2009 a 08:21 am

Make sure you get a decent HDMI, a poor one can turn a high end TV's picture into something that a cheap TV produces.

Cb34 May 19th, 2009 a 07:43 am

My Savvy Tip:

Before buying a TV. Make a simple carboard cut out of the size of the TV you're looking to buy. Check that the wall you like to hang the TV on is of the right construction.

Be happy with your choice as Your family/friend's TV that is a few inches bigger always look better at first!!

Despite what you might think, size isnt everything - make sure you get a tv that is the right size for the room it is in

andyj300 May 18th, 2009 a 10:32 pm

Tip: To decide what size screen to purchase, you should consider the ideal size relative to your viewing distance. The optimal viewing distance is 3 x the height of the screen. So if your'e screen is 2ft from bottom to top, your optimal viewing distance would be 6ft from the screen.

poorboys May 18th, 2009 a 10:31 pm

Cleaning a LCD screen is like making love to a beautiful women.

Be gentle and use a damp soft cloth???.

vikashjain May 18th, 2009 a 10:28 pm

My tip: When buying a thing such as TV, never go for the cheaper option. After all you won't be buying this every 3 week - or even 6 months. Do you research - know your pixels well. Check out the difference between plasma and LCD/TFT and always keep in mind the reasons for buying the unit....happy watching...:)

dippydoodah May 18th, 2009 a 09:48 pm

My tip would be to give the lovely Dell telly to me as I don't have a posh la-di-da all-singing all-dancing jobby. And my portable is about 28 years old. And I certainly don't have one which has even heard of HD, let alone is HD ready! But I would have - if I won. Aaaaah :-) See how much pleasure that would bring me?
So - go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on on go on go on go on go on go on -let me win for effort - pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease! (Oh and thank you for listening.)

My tip is... don't buy a 1080p TV smaller than 37"! The bigger the better ;)

Cheddar May 18th, 2009 a 08:49 pm

My savvy tip is related to the Sony 52" Bravia TV which Dell sell... When you are not watching TV, turn it into a digital picture frame with Picture Frame mode. Cool feature! :)

My personal savvy tip is this...

Plasmas and LCDs are a bugger to keep dust-free. So instead of worrying about your neighbours taking the mick at all that dust on the screen, just make sure you turn the TV on when anybody comes around - can't see all that pesky dust then! :D

jlee26 May 18th, 2009 a 08:45 pm

Sneaky tip? Persuade someone else to buy a big expensive telly, then offer to buy their slightly smaller one dirt cheap.

Well I was thinking of laser eye surgery at £2,600 but in the end decided on a 50" TV as it was less than half the price. Top tip - forget laser eye surgery - Get a bigger TV!

:D

ashmoon May 18th, 2009 a 08:37 pm

A large screen TV may look the right size in a shop but will look much larger in your house. Check the overall size carefully to make sure you have enough room for the TV you are about to buy.

bluehalf May 18th, 2009 a 08:28 pm

My tip is to look elsewhere for a tv as they are damm expensive on the dell site!

cocksy May 18th, 2009 a 08:15 pm

If you can, try and see the TV working in a shop that has the picture calibrated, so you can see what the picture and quality is like for yourself - its got to be better than just going on what the spiel says!!! :)

DynoDaz May 18th, 2009 a 08:14 pm

Tip: TV reviews are helpful for establishing a shortlist. But never rely on anyone else's opinion. Make sure you see the TVs in person before you part with your cash...

bbgmp May 18th, 2009 a 06:32 pm

TV's which are 720p can actually have better viewing quality than a 1080i. Also, don't forget about the importance of a high contrast ratio.

NorthScot May 18th, 2009 a 06:22 pm

Sony LCD TVs like the KDL-40V5500 have great displays and USB connections - so pop your photos on a memory stick and watch them on the big screen, they look great!

My tip is HDMI connections are a must, but don't spend obscene amounts of money on them a good cheap lead is just as good as the more expensive ones.

mmdmmd May 18th, 2009 a 05:44 pm

Savvi Tip: If you are planning to get a LCD TV less than (and including) 37" then you should consider saving yourself some money by buying a 720p model. Because many studies found that you cannot see the difference between a 1080p and a 720p TV unless the screen size is 40" or upward

My tip is not to worry about the energy efficiancy of your appliance by simply buying an electricity extension cable long enough to reach your neighbours plug socket in his garage....

SewerSide May 18th, 2009 a 05:23 pm

My savvy tip is to get a bluray player to fully experience hi def, without paying sky subscriptions. The Sony KDL-40W5500 LCD TV looks good for under £1100.

crepness May 18th, 2009 a 05:22 pm

If you can afford it, 1080p is well worth the money. The Sharp LC46XL2E looks like a good buy. There's also no need to spend big bucks for an HDMI cable. It's a digital signal so either the signal gets through or it doesn't.

Lavender May 18th, 2009 a 05:12 pm

Choose a TV which is HD ready, for those future amazing experience, and 1080p for a clearer ,sharper picture.

nedski May 18th, 2009 a 05:12 pm

Don't spend extra money on a 1080p tv unless you're going to sit close enough to appreciate it! Often 720p is high enough.

catchpm May 18th, 2009 a 05:04 pm

Don't cheap out on poor quality cables (HDMI) for your state of the art HD TV. It's like buying a Ferrari and using cooking oil to run it!

My savvy tip is to go for a Full HD 1080p TV, if you can afford it (and with 6% Dell discount it'll be a bit cheaper!) The picture quality will be noticeably better than a 720p screen, especially on the larger size screens.

jrobertson17 May 18th, 2009 a 03:13 pm

Hannspree Xv HT11-19E1-000 - 19" LCD TV

christiana03 May 18th, 2009 a 01:21 pm

Samsung TVs are much more easy and simple to understand in term contrast, brightness, sound and usability which I feel out class Sony TV hand down and most other brands.

(Samsung M460MXn 46" LCD Black 1920x1080 450 cd/m2 Brightness 3000:1 Contrast Ratio 8ms)

ibage May 18th, 2009 a 12:58 pm

1080p is only really noticeable on a TV of 40" or larger

igvod1886 May 18th, 2009 a 12:56 pm

My Tip: If you are planning on using the display as a computer monitor as well... it really should be 1080p if just using it as a tv and under 37" if you only watch normal tv and don't game save some cash and buy a 720p screen!

Elya May 18th, 2009 a 12:32 pm

Savvy Tip: When you buy a TV, make sure that the contrast is high (>10000:1); the blacks will be deeper and the image of a better quality. Also make sure the TV has HDMI ports for HD resolution with your other HD equipments.

mabbutts May 18th, 2009 a 12:30 pm

TIP:

Start saving your cashback if you want to purchase the NEC MultiSync LCD6520L....

At £10.5k+ it'll take a while to cover the cost of that 65" tv!

MrSoft May 18th, 2009 a 12:28 pm

Sony KDL-40S5500 - 40" BRAVIA LCD TV isn't bad.

Tip = make sure you've got an audio out for the tv if it's got a built-in digital tuner so you can put it through your hifi.

Got to say not too impressed with most of the tv prices... my Toshiba is listed there for £50 more than I paid a year ago!

bigdannyb May 18th, 2009 a 12:23 pm

My tip is look around for reviews of picture quality dont get sold on stats like 1080p - there are as many very bad 1080p TV's as there are good. When you watch a tv you want to go wow nice picture - not wow nice resolution !

shakeelsabir May 18th, 2009 a 12:21 pm

I would advice to make sure your HD id 1080p resoltion. Its the best for playing games.

ktrinh May 18th, 2009 a 12:16 pm

For safety I would mount 37"+ TV on a decent stand and not rest it on a table if you have little ones at home.

mjdalzell May 18th, 2009 a 12:08 pm

Worth checking you are getting Full HD and not just HD Ready.

The Full HD spec 1080p provides 1920 x 1080 resolution and means you can have a larger screen when sitting at the same distance as a HD Ready set.

The HD Spec 720p is only 1366 x 768 resolution.

Worth paying the extra for the Sony KDL-32V5500 - 32" BRAVIA LCD TV - widescreen - 1080p (FullHD) - HDTV 1080p model.

Now that's a Savvy tip !

Tip: a 19" screen is perfect for use in a caravan.

ferrett May 18th, 2009 a 11:58 am

savvy tip:

If your looking for both a new TV & Computer but cant afford both or want to save on space consider buying one for the same purpose. It is very simple to either use your monitor to enable viewing digital TV or to use your TV as a PC monitor and this isnt restricted to only HDTVs as any TV can be connected to a computer simply.

See: http://www.engadgethd.com/2006/02/08/how-to-connect-your-pc-to-your-hdtv/

for further information on this. This helps to save space especially in smaller rooms and can be a large cost saving.

Jeewhizz May 18th, 2009 a 11:57 am

My tip would be, if you are going to put it on the wall, make sure you use the right fittings, else it might fall off! They are heavy beasts!

sue2coats May 18th, 2009 a 11:56 am

ViewSonic N2011 - 20.1" LCD TV - silver
Very small and perfect for a kitchen or kids room

mattdunger May 18th, 2009 a 11:51 am

My tip is to buy a logitech harmorny one remote, hide away all your media boxes out of sight in a media cabinet, and make the room a clutter free environment with the TV the centre of attention. And also don't waste money on expensive speaker cables - a CAT5 cable with 4 pairs twisted together to each speaker is more than sufficient for home cinema.

cleary3 May 18th, 2009 a 11:48 am

A nice little tv like the Sharp LC 19D1EWH - 19" Aquos LCD is perfect for rooms where you dont need a giant screen. With 6% cashback, I might just treat myself.

Ricxhollis May 18th, 2009 a 11:39 am

Full HD means its 1080p (which is good), HD Ready means it works with an HD signal, but might not actually be HD!

hall08j May 18th, 2009 a 11:36 am

My tip is to get a TV with as many HDMI connections as possible. These will be used more and more in the coming years.

HANNS.G HX191D at £94, free delivery & 3 year warranty it's a steal. If a manufacturer can give you a 3year guarantee then it must be good. Even if you upgrade after a year or 2 you can sell it & use the selling point of the guarantee to give the buyer confidence.

jakeshaw May 18th, 2009 a 11:28 am

Savvy Tip:

Buy the cheapest HDMI cable/s you can for your tv/computer/av equipment.

There is no advantage in expensive/branded/etc cables, all products with the HDMI logo on the packaging meet the required specification and will perform just as well as the ones that cost more than 10x the price.
Different than analogue cables, digital cables like HDMI will either work or not work (either a blank screen or obvious 'sparklies' all over the screen).
Until recently, all cables (from 99p to £199) were made in a couple of select factories in china, the only plants that had the equipment to terminate the connectors. As far as I know, there is one in the USA now .
As said before, simply look for the official HDMI logo on the packaging and the price.

If you want to add an extra TV to the house but don't have much space why not get a small screen TV with PC Interface 15 PIN VGA D-Sub then you can use the screen as a PC monitor and TV (& if you have plenty of HDMI, component video inputs you can put all the gaming consoles there as well)

BexHawke May 18th, 2009 a 11:14 am

atisa1 May 18th, 2009 a 11:10 am

ls5302 May 18th, 2009 a 11:03 am

Choose LCD rather than Plasma too save money of electricity bill.

Mamzie May 18th, 2009 a 10:58 am

If you are looking for a larger TV and want a true home cinema experience, then you may want to look out for the next generation of high definition - 1080p HD. High Definition is reliant on the number of pixels on the screen to display high levels of detail. 1080p HD uses twice as many pixels as a HD Ready TV.

imrany May 18th, 2009 a 10:56 am

my tip is look for a 100hz tv
cheapest is Sharp LC 32DH77E

Savvy Tip - go for 100hz for playin your xbox 360 - reccommend the Toshiba 37RV555DB

astevens4 May 18th, 2009 a 10:48 am

Savvy Tip - when comparing TV's not all "HD READY" is the same - 1080p is the highest quality, then you have 1080i - the i stands for interpolated, which means its usually a 720p with a process to enhance the signal to HD quality - not nearly as good as 1080p,
Then comes 720p - budget end, capable of good quality, but Blu-ray is a bit wasted on these displays.

juleann111 May 18th, 2009 a 10:24 am

ioanowen May 18th, 2009 a 10:18 am

natz101 May 18th, 2009 a 10:15 am

Savvy tip: make sure the TV you buy has more than one HDMI slot. If you have more than one HD component (blu-ray player, x-box 360, wii, sky hd), you will soon get bored of swapping over the leads at the back of the tv!

If you're connecting a TV to a HTPC, the quality of the tv remote and sound make no odds if you're using external components for these functions. You're essentially buying a glorified monitor.

Tip - Make sure your tv has enough Scart inputs for all your devices.

goosemonster May 18th, 2009 a 07:39 am

tip - bigger isn't always better. Make sure your new TV will 'fit' your room. Better to have a modest 37" that looks good than a massive 50" that drowns the room.

riccardo5 May 18th, 2009 a 06:30 am

Here is the most important tip, whichever brand of TV you buy, be it LCD or Plasma, Sony, shap or Dell. All TV's come set up in "Dynamic" mode which really means let's make the screen as bright as possible tso that it stands out when on display in a showroom with overhead fluorescent lighting. First thing to do is change that to a more natural setting. Then you can tune the contrast and brightness yoursels as these are likely locked in Dynamic mode. Now the odd bit, the brightness control actually adjusts the black level, so choose a picture with someone wearing a dark suit and adjust so that you can see the variation in texture. The contract control adjusts the white level so choose a picture with a white shirt or dress and adjust so that you can see the textures. You may need to go back to readjust brightness after this if so recheck contrast until you are happy with both. Yous hould now have a much more natural picture. The backlight can now be adjusted to suit your room and you will have Tv that won't strain your eyes. Job done.

IWANTMORECASH May 18th, 2009 a 06:06 am

My Savvy tip of choice would be to get a decent 5.1 surround sound system to go with your telly, no point having a great TV if you aint got the sound to go with it.

My savvy tip is: do your research, but don't hang about too long, some of these deals don't last too long.

dtether May 17th, 2009 a 05:41 pm

My savvy tip is get a big 1080p set ONLY if you've worked out some SOURCE(S) of 1080 resolution material - eg Freesat HD box, bargain HD-DVD player, a Blu-ray/PS3 or if you must a Sky-HD setup. (Even then, those 65" Sharp/NEC sets sold by Dell will only work well if you're sat the right distance from them.)

alexlea88 May 17th, 2009 a 05:41 pm

My savvy tip is that you don't really need a huge TV for a normal size room. The owner of our local shop refused to sell us a larger TV beacuse he said there was no point in the size of living room that we had.

So save your pennies and just go for a sensible size, not a cinema screen size.

Otherwise buy a hi-gain digital aerial.

snoakes May 17th, 2009 a 04:18 pm

amyross May 17th, 2009 a 04:11 pm

My tip is - make sure that your HD tv is full 1080p resolution to make the most from it. Also, do not spend a fortune on a HDMI cable, you can pick one up for under a tenner which is just as good as the £90+ ones on offer in TV stores etc. :)

chiefwiggam May 17th, 2009 a 03:50 pm

Always buy a Sony, you get for you pay for!

richhall May 17th, 2009 a 03:50 pm

My tip is not too worry too much about getting a cheap HDMI cable - it's a digital signal, so there's really no benefit in splashing out on a super-expensive one.

angel316 May 17th, 2009 a 03:49 pm

Top tip: Make sure the TV is the right size for your room and if you are considering wall mounting that is no good for a room full of people but OK if there are only two of you. If you have a large family and a big room a TV with a good rotation on it stand is also very useful and makes the TV more versatile for gaming, especially with the Wii.

mattymilne May 17th, 2009 a 03:43 pm

tip: spring for a higher end HDMI cable for that extra sharpness in your pictures

Tip: If your buying a HDTV you might want to think about getting some HD channels. These are not available of freeview at the moment. There are currently 2 options. The pay for option: For example Sky have a good HD service for a monthly subscription. The second is free (after initial installation fee): Freesat has the free to air HD channels for example BBC HD and 4 HD.
Alternately if your into your films get a Bluray player! You will really notice the difference and it may also upscale your normal DVD's to a better quality.

ruff26 May 17th, 2009 a 01:27 pm

My Savvy tip is for a full HD experience always look for 1080p TVs. Secondly remember that bigger is not always better. You need to consider the size of the room you are putting your TV in before deciding on what size to purchase.

paulorrick1 May 17th, 2009 a 01:20 pm

Justcop May 17th, 2009 a 12:44 pm

check that TV's advertised as HD are 1080i/p not 720p to get a better HD watching experience.

simonallsopp May 17th, 2009 a 12:43 pm

When you go HD, the weakest link in the picture quality is probalby your own eyes - get 'em tested!

Isobel2000 May 17th, 2009 a 12:42 pm

1080p is only really noticeable on a TV of 46" Aquos LCD TV will do for me

rbuckley79 May 17th, 2009 a 12:39 pm

My savvy tip: if you intend to connect your PC or laptop to the TV then get one that has VGA or DVI. It's so much easier when you don't have to mess about with converters and adaptors.

Chompsky May 17th, 2009 a 12:36 pm

My tip is to copy my parents and prop up a piece of cardboard the size of the TV you want in the room where it's going to be- that way you can decide if the TV is going to be too big (or not big enough...).

nayanm May 17th, 2009 a 12:21 pm

My Savvy tip: Set the Drop Down menu to Low to High. Then navigate over to left menu of TV sizes (i.e. TVs 30" - 34", 35" - 39" etc), and open each price band as a new tab in your browser. You may need to toggle between Low to High and High to Low for your size interest. From there you can tell if it's worth investing in a bigger or smaller tv.

asjbaker May 17th, 2009 a 12:10 pm

Savvy Tip: Don't get a TV that's too big for the size of the room you are putting it in. Just because you can fit a 45" TV in the corner of the room doesn't help when you are sitting 4 foot away! You'll do your eyes in!

PaulStansfield May 17th, 2009 a 12:09 pm

My tip.
Buy the best you can afford. You will get better value for money and it means you won't need, or want to replace in the near future!

LG M1994D-PZ £220.04, was £228 - nice tv and a nice price too!

fointy May 17th, 2009 a 11:02 am

Consider the power usage of whatever electronics you're buying. A good estimate is that 1W on over the entire year will add up to a pound (@ roughly 12p / kWh).

So for the tv in question the "Sony KDL-32V5500 - 32" BRAVIA LCD TV - widescreen - 1080p (FullHD) - HDTV 1080p". Standby mode over the ENTIRE year (@ 0.17 W) will cost you about 20p - I'm not saying you shouldn't turn it off, but realise that standby mode isn't using all that much.

If you have the telly on for about 5 hours a day (@ 109 W) it will probably cost about £25 a year to run.

dobhduc May 17th, 2009 a 10:55 am

My Savvy tip is simple - make fake snow by rubbing together the ploystyrene packing blocks when you unpack your new TV. It will keep the kids amused for hours while you get to pick what to watch on the new TV!

paulgubb May 17th, 2009 a 07:53 am

my Tip: if you are looking for an really good picture quality, and want to be 'future proof', then forget LCD and Plasma. Look at the new LED tv's which are coming out, Samsung already have a range out, and Sony have some on the way, the Sony one is rated as the best TV they have ever made, top class quality picture.

srr24 May 17th, 2009 a 07:29 am

TIP: Always listen to your OH and buy a bigger TV than you think you'll possibly ever want. Saves years of I told you so's when bigger and better models come out. So I suggest the Sharp PN-G655RE - 65" LCD flat panel display - widescreen - 1080p (FullHD) - HD ready 1080p will buy you a few years of peace!

rhona00 May 17th, 2009 a 07:27 am

My tip would be to make sure you buy the best you can afford if you want to be future proof for as long as possible, ok you only need 1 hdmi at the moment, but the kids may gat an xbox elite or ps3 for christmas, sky may well bring down the price of sky hd, or you may become in the position where you want it all! I would only buy a 1080p tv, and from dell the Sony KDL-40W5500 - 40" BRAVIA LCD TV looks fab, and with cashback from quidco, what could be better! 100Hz too which is important if you're into gaming (it refreshes the screen at twice the speed)

jumapech May 17th, 2009 a 06:45 am

Tip:If you are looking to buy a new TV always check out the Dell website for a good range and prices are keen as well. Always use Quidco to make it an even better deal!

AndyPotter May 17th, 2009 a 06:40 am

Savvy Tip: most LCD televisions have a VGA socket - you can use this to plug your laptop / computer in to the TV and watch iPlayer, 4OD and other streaming video on the large screen.

Not a bad deal at £763.54 Sharp LC 42DH77E - 42" Aquos LCD TV - 100Hz - widescreen - 1080p (FullHD) - HDTV 1080p. When buying LCD's TV its better to buy upto 42".

markv May 16th, 2009 a 10:49 pm

The Sony KDL-32V5500 is a full HD 1080p bargain at £718.69, so buy one for the lounge and if you win this competition you can treat yourself in the bedroom as well!

Zyyb May 16th, 2009 a 10:47 pm

You need 3+ HDMI's - If you're getting anything less then a 50" and sit over 5 feet away, dont worry about 1080p, go cheaper to a 720p.

I'm a fan of projectors though, current technology is much better then it used to be..

samsach May 16th, 2009 a 10:34 pm

"Quidco" you are the best.....

HD technology is great..////

Sony KDL-52Z4500 - 52" is great of all

Buying a home theatre sound system such as the Samsung HT-TX500R will make your viewing experience so much more enjoyable

bibendum May 16th, 2009 a 10:07 pm

My tip is to check new tv's for DNLA connectivity. DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) is a standard used to allow entertainment devices (games consoles, tv's, etc.) within the home to share their content with each other across a home network without a complicated configuration process.

aboooo May 16th, 2009 a 09:40 pm

Get as many HDMI ports as you can. More and more devices use them so you will need them in the future. 2 is an absolute minimum.

jezcooke May 16th, 2009 a 09:14 pm

My tip: buy the NEC MultiSync LCD6520L as it's the most expensive telly they've got therefore you make the most amount of money in Quidco cashback! There's logic there somewhere! ;-)

NATLIE May 16th, 2009 a 09:13 pm

Check your room out first - you need to know if your walls can take the weight before buying a wall mount or you might end up having to fork out for a TV stand as well!

howardjosephs May 16th, 2009 a 08:59 pm

my tip is don't buy a bigger tv than you need and don't plumb for an expensive 1080p tv unless you have a blueray dvd or sky hd - it's a waste otherwise!

Hulligan May 16th, 2009 a 08:49 pm

1080p is only really noticeable on a TV of 40" or larger.

To Make the most of your 1080p Screen you really need a bluray player.

jjw1988 May 16th, 2009 a 08:48 pm

Savvy tip....don't by something you wont use on a tv just because its "the best" no point in getting 1080p unless for HD gaming, sky hd or bluray. 720p will look as good for normal tv/dvd watching.

Doris999 May 16th, 2009 a 08:34 pm

My savvy tip would be - if you're going to spend lots of money on a flash TV, spend a few quid on decent scart cables to connect it all up too as there's no point buying the cheapest cables to connect up to a £3000 TV and £1000 DVD player!

llcoolam May 16th, 2009 a 07:22 pm

My savvy tip is the Samsung P50H 50" Plasma Widescreen 1365x768 Resolution 1300cd/m2 because its cheaper than the 40" 720p Samsung 400CXn and much better screen too!!!
Erm I need a new TV... :-P

moneyballs2 May 16th, 2009 a 07:20 pm

jobutcher May 16th, 2009 a 06:52 pm

Turn your TV off and don't leave it on standby, invest in an energy monitor and you'll be amazed how much juice things use. Digital tv's use much more than conventional CRT tv's, that goes for DAB radios as well.

mrehman74 May 16th, 2009 a 05:29 pm

My tip: always check get good contrast ratio and go for larger viewing angles, otherwise you will end up seeing dim negatives of the screen at slightly off centre seats. The size of screen should suite your room, don't bilndly follow a dumb advice of 'getting the biggest screen you can afford'.

My Tip: To Experience the cinemas experice you need a big TV with surrond sounds

imtiaz91 May 16th, 2009 a 01:15 pm

my tip: don't judge a tv just by it's brand name. Look for other brands as well, dell wouldn't sell crap tvs...

LondonLee May 16th, 2009 a 01:12 pm

All TV's support TV-OUT, a great way to carry on using a laptop with a broken screen :(

cashcrop May 16th, 2009 a 01:07 pm

My tip: Biggest is not necessarily best. Go for a size that suits the room - rather than to impress. My living room is fine with a 32" - anything larger would dominate the room and look out of place. And go for Sony Bravia's. They are brilliant.

hillcolin May 16th, 2009 a 01:07 pm

Years since we bought our last Sony, great quality just looks like a huge box in the room compared with newer models! My tip would be to buy the Sony KDL-32V5500 £718.69 good size without being too big or hope you win one!

mynameisearle May 16th, 2009 a 12:59 pm

wraggy May 16th, 2009 a 12:34 pm

Tip: Having a Full HD TV and Blu Ray player is all well and good, but only if you have a good audio system to go with it! The standard speakers on most TVs are shocking, consider buying a HDMI compatible audio system to complete your setup

ttruscott May 16th, 2009 a 12:25 pm

My tip is to wait a year. Not what Dell want to hear but the price will halve and the quality will improve.

TheGoalMachine May 16th, 2009 a 12:19 pm

Size does matter. Don't get a bigger TV just because it's a few inches bigger than your mates, get one that is the correct size for your room / viewing distance. Spend the extra cash you have saved on getting a better quality 1080i etc.

pastey May 16th, 2009 a 12:18 pm

my tip is if your going to buy anything from dell do it through quidco and get the cashback

eric3643 May 16th, 2009 a 12:18 pm

Savvy Tip - My top tip is to make sure the TV has a digital receiver as we are moving to digital next month in my area.

alandmunn May 16th, 2009 a 12:17 pm

Samsung PS50B551T3W 50" Plasma TV Full HD 1920x1080. Less than a grand and like having a cinema in your house. Sweet !!

causrino May 16th, 2009 a 12:16 pm

As well as Full HD 1080p resolution, the RV series gets the best from HD content by using 100 Hz picture processing which virtually eliminates motion blur often associated with fast moving sports action with its 24 frames-per-second display - so you're watching exactly what the director intended

busabus May 16th, 2009 a 12:11 pm

Toshiba 42ZV555DB - 42" REGZA ZV Series LCD TV - 100Hz - widescreen - 1080p. Half the price of a similar size Sony.

My personal tip is not to exclude looking at monitors. Seeing as you'll probably get seperate sound, and you'll probably use a seperate tuner, it's not much different.

Catelin May 16th, 2009 a 12:09 pm

My tip is to play off DELL against other retailers to get the best deal you can!

wagnerlaw May 16th, 2009 a 12:08 pm

TIP: 1080p!! and that's not pennies, that's ultimate HD !!

Woodie May 16th, 2009 a 11:59 am

check whether tv is 1080i, 1080p or 720i
This effects the quality and the price.

hcheemayy May 16th, 2009 a 11:57 am

khorrumqkhan May 16th, 2009 a 11:45 am

NEC MultiSync LCD6520L - 65" LCD flat panel display - widescreen - 1080p (FullHD) - HD ready - black All for £10,850.17. My savvy tip is :- Get a professional to wall mount this or get the extended waranty if your going to do it yourself.

miwinter May 16th, 2009 a 11:42 am

Be savvy and save... don't be obssessed by brand... check reviews from other owners/purchasers and uncover hidden gems, for example, the Hannspree Xv HT09 28" LCD TV - excellent televisions and not "silly size" for the average UK living room :D

bluecat35 May 16th, 2009 a 11:42 am

The HANNS ones are the cheapest.

jim678 May 16th, 2009 a 11:35 am

Dont forget the sound, a good home cinema set up makes all the difference

rickkky May 16th, 2009 a 11:32 am

Sony KDL-32V5500 - 32" BRAVIA LCD TV - widescreen - 1080p (FullHD) - HDTV 1080p - piano black oh and... Make sure the TV is not too big for your room size. i prefer a better picture than a bigger screen

Danbuckley5 May 16th, 2009 a 11:30 am

Take a look at the Toshiba 37RV555DB - 37" REGZA RV Series LCD TV. 37" is a great size for most living rooms, it's 1080p so you can get the most out of HD TV, and most importantly, it's a snip at £746.12

johnwp May 16th, 2009 a 11:29 am

If you have young children who run around in the lounge, mount the TV up on the wall so that they can't knock it over.

charmer May 16th, 2009 a 11:29 am

Go for the NEC MultiSync LCD6520L. Its better then sex !!

ozman May 16th, 2009 a 11:23 am

The Sharp LC 19D1EBK is £6.04 cheaper in black than if you bought it in white or red. That equates to almost 6 cans of beer that could be purchased to drink while watching the footy on this device.

JSouthern May 16th, 2009 a 11:23 am

Best value 19 " TV is NEC LCD19WV : LCD display : TFT. £114.70.

ilovefish343 May 16th, 2009 a 11:22 am

Sharp LC 46D65E 46" tv, great hi def pic for tv and even better for looking at quidco

foyzur May 16th, 2009 a 11:16 am

NEC MultiSync LCD6520L - 65" LCD flat panel display - widescreen - 1080p (FullHD) - huge therefore the best

LAX May 16th, 2009 a 11:15 am

Choose the best quality you can afford for the style you want ... as in the long run the technology will be at the highest end, because you dont usually change your tv's often ... Probably only a handful in your lifetime if you look after them ;-)

markinoxon May 16th, 2009 a 11:13 am

1080p or 720p? Almost all signals/sources are standard definition or 720p. 1080p should not come as a deal-breaking fact unless you are quite specific about your priorities (some Blu-ray and console games). By the time ALL signals are full HD your TV will need replacing anyway!

mim5577 May 16th, 2009 a 11:06 am

Ultimately... Alway check on quidco before you purchase ANYTHING!!!! With cashback AND discount codes this is definately the site to shop through ;D

NickHall101 May 16th, 2009 a 11:02 am

Sharp TVs tend to have the best energy ratings = less electricity bills

izi21 May 16th, 2009 a 10:58 am

Make sure you place your TV near an electricity socket!!!

dickuk May 16th, 2009 a 10:48 am

Pick up a Dell Mini - they are great !

ccaple May 16th, 2009 a 10:31 am

Make sure the TV is not too big for your room size.

squee May 16th, 2009 a 10:30 am

Squee's top tip: Don't forget the scart sockets if connecting up to a DVD player! Go for gold though as gold covered scarts are the best quality.

chrishilton May 16th, 2009 a 10:29 am

I'd definitely recommend getting a wall mount to keep your new tv safe from sticky fingers (you know who)

jaydave90 May 16th, 2009 a 10:28 am

Make sure if you get a Full HD or HD Ready TV you have High Definition content to play on it otherwise it is a bit of a waste getting a HD TV. For example you could hook up a PS3, Xbox 360 or Home Theatre PC and watch HighDef stuff!

purplestar1999 May 16th, 2009 a 10:27 am

My tip is to buy the Sharp LC 42DH77E - 42" Aquos LCD TV and make time to read the instructions. That way you'll find out how to do all kinds with it that you wouldn't if you just switch it on and go! May aswell make the most of your money!

Daddyouk May 16th, 2009 a 10:27 am

Use Quidco for even more savings

chrishilton May 16th, 2009 a 10:26 am

Mine would be to make sure you get one with two SCART connectors so you can have both the freeview/sky and dvd player connected

deefadog May 16th, 2009 a 10:24 am

My tip, if you get a HD TV then get a HD input for it as otherwise what's the point! - This looks good value - KDL26V4000U + HTPB350ISFI Blu-Ray Disk Player and 5.1ch Home Theatre System full HD audio and HD input!

fatspanner May 16th, 2009 a 10:20 am

Make sure you buy a TV that suits your needs. Not everyone needs a full HD TV. A lot of TV service providers only have limited HD services, so spending the extra for a 1080 set can be wasteful as you will not see the benefit.

sueclark13 May 16th, 2009 a 10:20 am

My savvy tip is Sony KDL-32V5500 - 32" BRAVIA LCD TV £718.69

kevinross May 16th, 2009 a 10:17 am

Lots of 100hz TVs at Dell. 100hz is best because the faster the refresh rate, the less flicker.

mokhreis May 16th, 2009 a 10:16 am

My Tip: Wall mount it!

cathryn1 May 16th, 2009 a 10:15 am

If you mount the tv on the wall, it will save space in your home and give the ultimate cinema experience.

claireyoung01 May 16th, 2009 a 10:15 am

Savvy tip is shipping is free

Maggie10 May 16th, 2009 a 10:11 am

Big isn't always best, this is a cracking deal when you buy a NEC LCD19WV - LCD display - TFT - 19". At £114.70, plus 6% back through the quidco site. Ideal for my bedroom,

laurenzo99 May 16th, 2009 a 10:06 am

My tip would be to measure the space where you want the TV to sit. May sound obvious but you may be able to fit in an even BIGGER TV (or find out that the TV you want wont fit!)

Grangey May 16th, 2009 a 10:04 am

Save yourself £60 off the Inspiron 15 laptop and buy the Sharp LC 52D65E - connect the two and enjoy 52" of web surfing, DVD and YouTube!

check whether tv is 1080i, 1080p or 720i

krisday27 May 16th, 2009 a 09:36 am

My tip is to reverse the throw away society culture that we live in and buy a good branded product (such as SONY) that will last for years. It works out cheaper in the long run. Oh yes, and as per above, a wall bracket is great (revoolving one) to create loads of extra space in your lounge.

pscandrett May 16th, 2009 a 09:36 am

Don't underestimate how big a large screen will look in your lounge...

joeryland26 May 16th, 2009 a 09:35 am

Always remember to go through quidco when you buy a tv from dell and if you buy a NEC MultiSync LCD6520L - 65" LCD flat panel display - widescreen - 1080p (FullHD) - HD ready - black for £10,850.17 - you'll probably never need to buy a cinema ticket again as you'll have your one in your own home with this - if you can fit it in!!!

size is important. 32" is optimum for Most sitting rooms. Oh yes and for MPs don't buy anything above a 20 inch!!! second hand Black and white is good enough for you to check out the news

knickers May 16th, 2009 a 09:10 am

If you are going to wall mount your TV, remember to consider the depth of the wall bracket required for the model as well as the depth of the screen itself!

maxtweenie May 16th, 2009 a 09:08 am

My tip is to ignore what the 'know alls' say about 1080 vs 720. Unless you're intending to sit 3 feet from the screen you're wasting money.

niamh May 16th, 2009 a 09:07 am

Think of the environment before going for a plasma screen. They cost twice as much to power and last about half as long as LCD.

stevenkely May 16th, 2009 a 09:01 am

If you're in two minds over which size to get, go for the biggest. A TV soon 'shrinks' in a room and you may regret not spending that little extra in the first place!

senaiboy May 16th, 2009 a 08:43 am

My savvy tip:

Don't buy a bigger TV than you really need. We tend to think bigger is better (not everything is!)

Consider the space in your living room and the distance from yourself to where the TV will be. You don't want to be moving your head around trying to watch TV! (okay it might do your neck some exercise but you won't like the neck pains afterwards :P )

2bcool2 May 16th, 2009 a 08:28 am

savy tip is you can save money as you dont always need a full 1080p tv if youre only gonna use it to watch satalite or cable tv as these are only broadcast in 720p :-)

love sony tv's .. worth every penny !

flyingflea May 16th, 2009 a 08:27 am

My savvy tip is to make sure you try different settings (contrast, brightness, sharpness etc.) to get the best picture. This should significantly improve the quality of picture you get from the default. Search online for your make and model of TV for settings for somewhere to start.

staceyemma May 16th, 2009 a 08:26 am

jnettleton May 16th, 2009 a 07:16 am

Sony KDL-52Z4500 - a great TV. If you get one, don't try to wall mount it on a thin plasterboard internal wall... It's a bit heavy.

csmith01 May 16th, 2009 a 07:07 am

My tip is go for 1080p, it's brilliant!

windhoek May 16th, 2009 a 07:00 am

checkout a tv's inputs before buying.

terrypin May 16th, 2009 a 06:59 am

My tip is mount the TV so you're looking down at it, rather than up: looking up is an unnatural position for the neck and can lead to headaches.

tereza2000 May 16th, 2009 a 06:57 am

1080p is only really noticeable on a TV of 46" Aquos LCD TV will do for me

When chossing your TV think about the size of the frame as well as the screen size and avoid getting a TV that is too wide for the wall you wanted to put it on!!

ali991 May 16th, 2009 a 06:50 am

My tip: Make sure you know that you have enough room to fit your tv into before you buy it. They are so big these days that you might buy it and then find it won't fit!!

My savvy tip to the question below is:

Do Dellware products carry a warranty?

Third-party software, peripherals and accessories products are covered by the warranties provided by the original manufacturer or publisher only. However, all Dellware products are covered by the Dell 30 day refund or replacement guarantee.

Hick May 16th, 2009 a 02:06 am

If the sharps on the site are anything like their earlier models, then they are very much worth looking at, definately more bang (inches!) for your buck when compared to the likes of the Sonys'

StuMonty May 16th, 2009 a 01:50 am

Looking at the Samsung Synchmaster T260HD. At £588 and with free shipping and your quidco thrown in you're looking at a great product at a good price.

gwlloyd May 16th, 2009 a 01:22 am

Dell are doing free shipping on most, if not all, TVs which given their size is pretty good!

Also, dont just measure your room for 50" if thats what your lookin at, find something that is a bit bigger (like a box or a painting), and get someone to hold it up - these TVs can really be very big and make your living room a bit stupid if you arent careful! Sometimes the biggest aint the best :P

sbalolia May 16th, 2009 a 01:20 am

Free shipping plus Quidco cashback! Its like they're giving it away!

maaaaaaaatt May 16th, 2009 a 01:05 am

Here's a tip for you..

Don't tell your wife/girlfriend/partner what it actually costs.

The secret is, work out what he/she would think is acceptable, and then add a bit on so they are a bit annoyed with you. This mild annoyance then distracts from how much you actually spent.

Not recommended for those who have joint bank accounts.

pepitoe May 16th, 2009 a 12:57 am

Some LCDs are a lot thinner than others, which looks better for wall mounting etc, so it is worth checking.

ssspend May 16th, 2009 a 12:43 am

Buy your TV from Dell via quidco, saves money, petrol, and having to speak to dippy salesmen.

maxlifo May 16th, 2009 a 12:42 am

*meant to say your mate "who only has a 720p set" oops :)

maxlifo May 16th, 2009 a 12:41 am

if you're using a PS3 on your shiny new 1080p TV and you want to take it over to a mates who only has a 1080p set, first make sure you set the PS3 to output at 720p. You'll get no picture otherwise (unless you connect the SD cable). I learnt the hard way ;-)

johnrulez May 16th, 2009 a 12:33 am

My Tip would be to buy the right size tv for the distance you are sitting away from it

sam888 May 15th, 2009 a 11:55 pm

Gallagher May 15th, 2009 a 11:53 pm

My tip is to buy the best quality connection cables you can, it's no good spending a fortune on a decent TV than connecting your DVD, sound system and sky box with inferior cables. But the best cables are not always the most expensive. Always shop around.

soulfireup May 15th, 2009 a 11:47 pm

buy a tv with a hdmi.

lucy105 May 15th, 2009 a 11:23 pm

Buy Red, help stop Aids cant get more Savvy than that

swaymyway May 15th, 2009 a 11:23 pm

My tip is to get one with a remote that can completely turn off the box, so you don't leave it in standby out of laziness because you can't be bothered unplugging it each night :)

beardsley May 15th, 2009 a 11:21 pm

My tip: As the screen gets bigger, so do the pixels. So sitting too close to a big TV, the picture will look worse than on a smaller one.

pinklady756 May 15th, 2009 a 11:13 pm

Get a Sky HD along with your new HD TV, plenty of channels to really appreciate the quality. Samsung ultra-thin LCD would be my first choice!

philhaz May 15th, 2009 a 09:48 pm

When wall-mounting a TV, make sure that it is at the right height to ensure comfortable viewing. A good guide is to have the viewer's eyeline one-third of the way up the screen when sitting. This applies to screens of all sizes!

arbk66 May 15th, 2009 a 09:42 pm

My savvy tip

...if your wall mounting buy a bigger size, its surprising how much a flatscreen shrinks to the eye when wall mounted.

Going through Quidco will pay for the next size up :)

jedimasterdurex May 15th, 2009 a 09:41 pm

My savvy tip - if you aren't swimming in cash then invest in an old CRT. Most flat screen pictures are not as good and you can pick a big screen one up second hand for under £20! Not only that but if you get a good brand then they run forever!

indyjo May 15th, 2009 a 08:44 pm

My tips, when you make your choice from the great selection on offer on the Dell site, & take (free) delivery of your flat screen telly & wall mount, make sure there are no electrical wires, or pipes hidden in the wall were you're planning to hang your TV!! Next, don't hang it too high that you can't comfortably reach to dust the screen! :-P Balancing precariously on a chair arm with a canary yellow cloth or feather duster in your hand, will totally negate any uber coolness attained by purchasing your fab telly from Dell in the first place :-D ;-)

jakmiller May 15th, 2009 a 08:42 pm

check that TV's advertised as HD are 1080p not 720p to get better HD viewing

An enormous flat TV can make your home more stylish and yourself look good.

turrican May 15th, 2009 a 08:01 pm

Don't get too sucked into worrying about which TV has the highest "dynamic contrast ratio" since there is no uniform standard for measuring it - it's more of a marketing ploy for Company A to say "Don't buy Company B's TV because it has a much lower DCR than our TV."

originalmelephant May 15th, 2009 a 08:01 pm

add a quidco link on the site then you can save even more money on a tv

jasonr May 15th, 2009 a 07:59 pm

Buy a TV that suits the size of the room. While 52" is a nice large size, in a small room or sitting close the picture doesn't look as good as some smaller screens.

Hi, Find something you want on Dell, apply for Amex Card if you are eligible because they are offering 5% Cashboack for the first 3 months, I have checked Dell does accept American Express. Also be sure to check on Web or Dell catalogue for discount codes and overall should save you yourself at least 11% (6% Quidco and 5% Amex). Savvy!
