Statement from Quidco about Deal Group Media (DGM)

July 21st, 2010

Update on 27th July 2010:

As promised we intend to keep you up to date with developments at DGM.

We have been in contact with the administrators (RSM Tenon) appointed to DGM Ltd and have given them all the necessary information regarding the money we believe is owed. With respect to money owed we are classified as 'unsecured creditors' of DGM and at the present time the administrators cannot make any payments to creditors.

The administrators are currently obtaining information about DGM, its business and the extent of its assets and liabilities. They will send their proposals for dealing with the affairs of DGM as soon as possible but certainly within 8 weeks of their appointment.

As soon as we receive any further relevant information from them we will of course pass it on to you.

Update on 21st July 2010:

The statement below is an update to the original support message sent to customers on Friday 16th of July concerning Deal Group Media. If you did not receive a support message your cashback has not been affected.

The list of affected merchants is as follows:

192.com, Aabro, Accountz, AFA Systems, Ambrose Wilson, Babysecurity.co.uk, BE Broadband, Beauty Expert, Ben 10 Online, Bingo on the Box, Bluestone, Book Direct Rooms, British Red Cross, Bump to 3, BuyMobilePhones, Car Audio Centre, Cho-Yung, Club Med, Condor Ferries, Costbiter, Decode Car Hire, Demon Internet, Dobbies, Eclipse Internet, Engage Mutual Assurance - Health Cash Plan, engage Mutual Assurance Child Trust, Engage Mutual Assurance Easy Save, Engage Mutual Assurance Junior Easy Save, engage Mutual over 50\'s Life Insurance,Equifax,Equifax Free Credit Report,Fashion World,Fifty Plus,Forest Holidays, Forthill Home,Free Orange SIM,Fussie,Gaming Club, Garmin,GIZOO, Gray & Osbourn, Helpucover Income Protection, Helpucover Mortgage Payment Protection, HelpuCover Pet Insurance, Home Shopping Direct,Hotter Shoes, House of Bath, ITV online shop, Jacamo, JackpotCity Casino, Jacobs Digital, JD Williams, Julipa, Jurys Inn, Lakeland Leather,Lebara Mobile, Machine Mart, Mankind, Marisota, Mazuma Mobile, Merchant 4577, Microwarehouse, MO-Call, National Trust, Naturally Close, New Now, Nickshop, Orange Home & Mobile Broadband, Orange Home Broadband, Orange Mobile Broadband, Parkdean Holidays, PC World Business, PDSA, Perfect Pizza,Petplan, Petplan Equine, Please&thankyou, Pontins, Premier Man, Red5, RU Books, RU Craft, SeaFrance Ferries, Siblu Holiday Parcs, Simply Be, Simply Yours, Sleeping Solutions, Snow+Rock, So Bathrooms, Soletrader, Talkmobile ,Terrys Fabric,The Adventure Company, The Dog House, Toystore.co.uk, Tracesmart, Viking Airlines, Virgin Bingo, Virgin Poker,Viva La Diva, Vodafone, Vonage, Warner Leisure Hotels, Washbag.com, Webfusion, Whatafind.com, Whats About Town, WHSmith Mobiles, Wilkinson Plus, Winegifts4U.co.uk.

As the status of DGM transactions depends upon the date of purchase and differs from merchant to merchant, if you have any concerns about a specific transaction, please contact us. We will then be able to look at your specific transaction and clarify the situation for you. When we have received full confirmation from DGM and their administrators, we will contact all affected members with a further update.

As noted in our original statement, you may see some of the affected retailers remaining on the Quidco site. This is because affected retailers may switch immediately to a new affiliate network and continue with their affiliate business. However, this will not be related in any way to existing transactions and enquiries.

The purpose of this statement is to give you an update on DGM in a way that is as open and transparent as possible. Our aim is to add clarity following some poor communication on our part and a lot of rumour and speculation.

On Friday 16th July Quidco was advised that DGM were going into receivership, leaving to the best of our knowledge, Quidco and thus 24,723 Quidco members owed nearly £400,000.

This follows several months during which we were constantly promised payment, which, based on a 5 year trading relationship we took in good faith. Over the last several months we have paid 11,946 Quidco members £194,000 of money owed to them by DGM.

This money came out of our own pockets as we have always tried to keep member payments going out in as timely manner as possible, even if the networks are slow in paying us. We have done this without fanfare, fuss or blogging over the last few months.

However, despite us paying £194,000 there is still over £200,000 owed to Quidco members by DGM.

So in short, we know it is a tough situation for our members. This situation is our ultimate nightmare, but please bear with us as there is still hope for a positive resolution for all.

Finally, know that we are fighting our corner for our members, trying everything possible to get this money back and putting in processes to help avoid this happening again. We will keep you updated as soon as we know more.

If you have any questions relating to this matter please contact our customer care team and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Michael Murphy,
Chief Executive
Quidco

Great cashback site, this is my favourite because it pays generous cashback on purchases . It pays 4p per click on the highstreetweb and 2p on searchchief. The website is easy to navigate with plenty of offers on show

The fact that TopCashBack have honoured members with the transactioned affected by DGM just puts another nail in the coffin as to why Quidco are no longer the no.1 Cashback site.

I for one will be moving all my transactions from here on in to them.

Whether members will actually see the dosh lost with DGM depends on many factors.

Legally it depends on whether DGM acts as principal or agent. If they are the principal in the flow of cash from retailer
-> DGM -> quidco -> member, then any cash due from the retailer must be paid to the receiver, Quidco becomes a creditor. However if DGM acts as agent then Quidco may request payment.

In the former case it may take years for the receiiver to determibe how much in the pound Quidco will receive, if any.

Of course Quidco could do as TCB and payout anyway. It could be argued that the new directors brought in, in Feb 2009 from the Financial Times failed in their duty of care, if it is true that DGM had payment problems for 5-7 months, and Qidco failed to make contingency plans.

I have to say that if I was still an active member I would be worried. The implementation of the new system last December wasn't a great success, failure to manage the DGM risk another disaster, and now Quidco are being hammered by the competition on the marketing front.

A constructive suggestion to try and repair the damage, assuming Quidco is unable to afford to match TCB's guarantee, is perhaps to waive the £5 fee for all members affected for one year? Wouldn't do me any good, as these new directors appear to be an accident waiting to happen.

Quidco are relying on lack of inertia, misplaced loyalty. and that the "problem" will blow over - savvier members will not put all their eggs in one basket and assess the alternatives.

Good luck guys ... PS I had a good time with Quidco, earned nearly £1500, but pleased I saw the writing on the wall.

user889332 July 29th, 2010 a 03:51 pm

I have to give credit to TopCashBack who have now decided to honour ALL cashback generated via DGM PLUS any associated Bonuses. To that I have to hold my hands up and say a big well done - that is what true customer care is about!!

Personally I think Quidco should just follow TCBs lead and maintain their reputation amongst it's members, especially since TCB is up there as a main rival.

Thoughts?

Hartland July 28th, 2010 a 11:59 am

I've noticed a few of my transactions that have failed to track recently have been with DGM (i.e. Whsmiths and PC world) which of course I have to wait a month before raising an inquiry. Assuming this non-tracking is to do with DGM's financial situation, and that there are probably others with the same non-tracking issues who will be raising queries once the month wait is up, the money DGM potentially owe you is more than you currently realise. (- I hope that makes sense!)

quidco July 27th, 2010 a 10:29 am

Hi,

@Hartland. I am afraid that this is why your Equifax cashback was declined.

Kind regards,
Jules

Hartland July 27th, 2010 a 09:34 am

sorry, meant to say equifax!

Hartland July 27th, 2010 a 09:34 am

Is this the reason my Experian cashback has been declined? I've not recieved any message to say my transaction was affected by this but it was declined with no reason.

priorslee July 23rd, 2010 a 09:07 pm

Quidco, thanks for the clarification in the update.

@brownmurder
The only place I could see the affected merchants was the post below from tiddy. My whinge was that quidco hadn't been as clear and open as they could have been - glad to see this has been improved now.

Lets hope they can get something sorted for a more positive outcome.

tiddy July 23rd, 2010 a 02:03 am

What a Donut!

kkdonut July 22nd, 2010 a 01:40 pm

Also just to add, if you are so hot on business, perhaps its worth considering study Law and doing a contract law module. Cashback is not guranteed by Quidco, and Quidco cannot be expected to pay such huge sums of money when they themselves are not getting it.
I seriously wonder as to why people on this planet are born.

kkdonut July 22nd, 2010 a 01:36 pm

Tiddy - Dont you dare make comments about myself, when you have no clue about myself or what I do.
Yes you may have a business forking out thousends of pounds a week, yes this is how many businesses operate, so surely YOU should understand what a predicament businesses are put under when a debtor owes them money.
I've studied business myself, and probally have a much more refined knowledge than you do, so please feel free to carry on with YOUR business and just hope that none of your suppliers or debtors go bankrupt in the near future - becuase I wonder what you will be first to do - Pay all your existing clients knowing you have very little chance of getting money back or would YOU take precautions and see how things unfold.
Once, again dont you ever put a comment like that again questionning what I say.

tiddy July 22nd, 2010 a 10:12 am

Re: quidco July 22nd, 2010 a 08:46 am

Why weren't the issues you'd like to clarify mentioned in the original announcement? Don't get me wrong, I have loved every penny that I have received from Quidco & god knows of how many more members you have from my recommendation, but you have dealt with this issue shockingly & it wouldn't surprise me if you have been damaged in some way but I hope you can turn this around & for some of us that have been with you from year one & remember last times 'Amnesty', it would be nice to know that the £25 in member (admin) fees that you have taken from me would cover yourselves when in time like these. All the best for the coming months. Tiddy

quidco July 22nd, 2010 a 08:46 am

Hi,

I know that many of you are understandably upset and we welcome your feedback and comments on here.

I would just like to clarify a couple of things.

If you have not had a personal communication from us then your cashback is not affected by this issue. We have published the full list of merchants on various forums, to individual customers and on the Quidco Member Moan Zone and I see that brownmurder has now very kindly pasted it here for you.

However, if you still have any queries, please contact our QuidCare team as they will be happy to advise you. Unfortunately I will not be able to answer any such queries in this blog.

Also, as I say, we welcome your comments but, as always, it is not acceptable to us for other cashback sites to be advertised on here and all posts of this nature will removed.

Kind regards,
Jules

In Leymans terms for the thickos: If you buy a Panasonic Television from Comet and it goes wrong, but Panasonic in the meantime have gone bust. Panasonic don't owe you a new TV do they? No, Comet do!"

Just for the "thickos", in the example you gave, you are buying the TV from Comet, so yes they do owe you a TV. You don't buy anything from Quidco, you are only redirected to the merchant! Your still buying from the actual merchant and getting a bonus from the merchants marketing budget.

brownmurder July 21st, 2010 a 10:46 pm

Interesting account guesstermation of Quidco. Why do so many of you think they don't make vast amounts of profit http://www.affiliates4u.com/forums/affiliate-marketing-lounge/73019-estimates-quidcos-turnover-growth-can-you-check-research.html.

priorslee July 21st, 2010 a 09:11 pm

I am disappointed to comment that your statement comprehensively fails to do what you say in your first para - "Our aim is to add clarity following some poor communication on our part and a lot of rumour and speculation."

You haven't bothered to list what retailers are affected.
You haven't said what transactions are affected.
You are leading members to go to other sources to find out basic info, hence fuelling the rumour & speculation.

From the list in one of the posts below, I suspect I am owed money, but I am finding out from this announcement - very unsatisfactory.

This post raises more questions than it answers - come on Quidco - get your act together.

mpwox11 July 21st, 2010 a 09:02 pm

I don't understand why members are complaining. If the firm has gone bust owing Quidco the commissions, it is completely fair that members don't get their cashback. That's the nature of the game in my eyes. After all, it is a cash back which was free anyway. I've been using Quidco since Feb 2007 and received £1,500 cash back. I use Quidco because their site is better than TCB and it works and they pay up. Keep up the good work Quidco.
PS. Can I have £10 cash back for my good comments! :-)

demares July 21st, 2010 a 08:26 pm

Hi Quidco,

I've been with you for 5 years and am not caught up in the DGM issue but your/our success is dependant upon a united community. I suggest that you look at the moneysavingexpert forums on your handling of the issue as ii the 14 pages I have viewed the community is abandoning quidco in it's droves. I too am concerned over the niaivity in the handling of both the collapse of DGM, lack of contingency and subsequent poor public relations.

Just join Topcashback ..., NO ADMIN FEE , THEY ARE HONOURING ALL TRANSACTIONS , and even give you £2.50 just for joining them !

marlovian July 21st, 2010 a 07:41 pm

As I see it if Quidco have paid out money they haven't recieved that is their loss. If any money is still owed then the member should lose that.

adrian2000 July 21st, 2010 a 07:39 pm

stevenash2008

As long as it is only a pound then yes!!

stevenash2008 July 21st, 2010 a 07:36 pm

adrian2000 your suggestion to bail Quidco out of this situation is very admirable, may I approach you the next time my rent is due?

stevenash2008 July 21st, 2010 a 07:33 pm

I wouldnt have thought so mccabek, the £5 annual fee that Quidco charges its 889,940 members, the kick backs they get from the affiliate networks (do you REALLY think 100% cashback is paid - I have a friend who does some PPC affiliate marketing and I can guarantee you that they recieve a higher % of revenue/cashback from the affiliate networks which they keep themselves) plus all of the high value cashback that mysterioulsy doesnt get tracked should more than cover any losses

adrian2000 July 21st, 2010 a 07:32 pm

stevenash2008

No I don't work for Quidco.

But how would you feel if you were out of pocket by say 140.00 pounds.

It might mot by a pound we would have to donate it might only be 50p

What is this to each member?

Adrian

Quidco is still number 1 in my eyes as cashback websites go.
In life, you win some and you lose some.
Noone ever always wins.
Cashback is never guaranteed, we know that guys.
Are other cashback sites similarly let down by this intermediary DGM? Probably.
Hang in there guys.

over the years I've been using quidco, I've not had any payments made yet as I wanted to just let it build up. As long as the tracker shows the amounts as being "received" does that mean i'm ok? I'd hate to lose £x hundred quid now :(

Will be setting up bacs details asap!

Thanks :)

Agree with the others - without a list of which companies DGM paid cashback on behalf of this statement is a little pointless as very few people know whether it even affects them.

I won't complain about not being paid - cashback is always a bonus and I don't go out of my way to get it when I wouldn't be buying something anyway. It would just be nice to know.

youngyy July 21st, 2010 a 06:44 pm

@tiddy - its business? everyone knows cashback isnt guaranteed, granted its annoying but if you budgeted for it then you're an idiot. There should be processes in place to avoid this, Quidco should have avoided this, they say these processes will be put in place. Not much else you can do

adrian2000 July 21st, 2010 a 06:40 pm

Michael,

Many thanks for the update for the Quidco membership.

Michael, not sure how this would go down, but maybe all of the members could donate from their cash back say One Pound towards all of the people who have lost their cash back by DGM going into administration?

Could you post the idea to all of the Quidco membership.

I am not affected by this but know how people will be feeling as I have used this site for 5 years.

After all we are the membership and feel that we can all work together to help out the membership for money they have lost.

Hopefully this will help keep Quidco the Number 1 cashback site with the best rates for members.

What do people think?

Thanks

Adrian

kkdonut - as your name sake, you know nothing of business do you? I fork out over £200 grand a week in my company & I don't have the money, its business...Back in the day - Quidco used to have an amnesty, where is it now?

kkdonut July 21st, 2010 a 06:25 pm

Dont be ridculous Tiddy - How can Quidco possibly pay over £200 grand when they themselves are not getting paid, from a company that has gone into receivership.
Cashback is never 100% guranteed. Use some common sense.

storeyrich July 21st, 2010 a 06:24 pm

Wish you'd sod off with your referral link to Topcashback pintofhof1 ...

Agreed Quidco, a list of merchants that will now not be honoured would be good to see. I read somewhere P&O, Orange and Telegraph were part of DGM's affiliate network ...

tiddy did you read the T & C's?

Babbler July 21st, 2010 a 06:16 pm

I too would like to know which transactions this affects - and have you removed the ones that will be affected now? Please provide a full list of transactions so I know where I stand cash wise please. I currently have quite a bit validated which I want to know if it will be paid. And also tracked items. Thanks.

tiddy July 21st, 2010 a 06:14 pm

You Say "there is still over £200,000 owed to Quidco members by DGM"

NO! DGM owes Quidco, Quidco still Owes it's members! FACT

jasonr July 21st, 2010 a 06:11 pm

Will a list of merchants that were tracked through DGM be available? Also, ideally some way of identifying the transactions that may not be paid on members statements.

Thanks.
