Quad bike insurance is unfortunately not as simple as other vehicle insurances such as car insurance or motorbike insurance. It may have ‘bike’ in the name, but most motorcycle insurers will not cover a quad bike, due to the off-roading nature of the vehicle.
Quad bikes are primarily off-road vehicles, mainly used in the farming and agricultural industry, however road-legal quad bikes are becoming more common as work and commuting vehicles.
If you begin to use your quad bike on the road, it is vital you purchase insurance, just as you would for any other vehicle. Specialist insurers will cover all types of road-legal quad bikes and ATVs, whether you have a sports quad, leisure quad, utility quad bike, or a buggy.
When purchasing quad bike cover it is important to let the insurer know a few things like where you intend to use the quad bike and for what purpose, so a tailor-made policy can be matched to your needs.
There are usually three types of cover for quad bike insurance, these include:
Third-party quad bike insurance is the most basic form of cover. This will cover you for any third-party damage or injury. This cover does not insure you for damages to your vehicle or injury to yourself in the event of an accident.
This insurance type covers you for everything above, plus fire-related damage to or theft of your vehicle.
Fully comprehensive quad bike insurance gives you complete cover. You will be covered for all of the above as well as accidental damage to your vehicle due to an accident.
A quad bike insurance policy can also offer the following, depending on your needs and circumstances:
As we have established, quad bikes are used for different purposes, whether it be for personal use or as part of your work and business. You need to decide whether you will make your quad bike road legal, or if it remains off road for example, in the agricultural industry.
Treat your road legal quad bike just as you would a car, they all have the same insurance requirements. They require a minimum of third-party only cover. You will also need to tax and MOT the vehicle, even if you only use it on the road a handful of times.
Off-road cover can protect your quad bike from theft or fire damage, but it is very rare insurers will offer you third-party cover. You’ll have to be very specific to the insurer when giving details of where you intend to use your quad bike and for what purposes - you must inform your policy provider if any of these circumstances change.
It's also worth asking your home contents insurance provider if you can list your quad in the same way you would a bicycle.
Often, to insure quad bikes, most insurers will request that you are 21 & over. Although this can vary between insurers, so before you purchase it with intent for riding on the road, check you can insure your quad.

If you want to take your quad on the road, you'll need road legal cover. Road-legal quads have the same insurance requirements as all other road vehicles and should be covered at a minimum of third-party only cover.
The premium costs of quad bike insurance depend on a number of factors, including:
A quad bike is classed as being a B1 vehicle by the Government. This means that to drive a road-legal quad bike on public roads, the driver must hold a full car licence or full motorcycle licence category B1.
Generally, you need a B1 category full motorcycle licence or full car licence. That means you’ll be a minimum of 17 years old before you can drive a quad bike on the road. Most insurers will only consider ages 21 and over.
Younger and less experienced motorcyclists (as with car drivers) are statistically more likely to have accidents, so the ‘risk’ is higher, hence more expensive premiums. As a 17-year-old, your premiums are likely to be significantly higher than a more experienced motorcyclist on the same bike.
The youngest age a child can ride a quad bike under adult supervision is suggested to be 6 years of age. However, there are toy 'quad bikes' or mini quad bikes that are available from as young as 6 months old up to 4 years of age.
