What is a SIM only contract?

A SIM only contract is where you pay a monthly allowance for minutes, texts, and data. With this type of contract, the mobile phone handset isn't included in the deal. You order the SIM card as part of the contract and purchase the phone separately.

Why choose a SIM only deal?

SIM only deals are a great alternative to buying a new mobile phone contract and have many benefits. These include:

  • Cheaper contracts - as you are not paying for a handset, you can often pick up better deals with greater monthly allowances
  • 5G availability - 5G Sims are available with SIM only deals too
  • Easier credit checks - you’re more likely to be accepted for a SIM only deal if you have bad credit, as the criteria isn’t as high as it is for a handset contract
  • Contract length flexibility - choose between a range of contract lengths including 30-day rolling contracts and 12-month contracts, plus switch tariffs easily if you change your mind
  • Save money on a new handset - in some instances, it’s cheaper to buy a SIM-free phone and purchase a SIM only deal separately
  • Environmentally friendly - if you’re happy with your existing phone, you can cut down on your carbon footprint and make your handset last longer

What to look for in a SIM only contract

When it comes to choosing a SIM only plan, think about the following factors:

  • How much do you use your phone and how many minutes, texts, and data will you need?
  • Do you have a preferred network? Do they offer freebies or incentives?
  • What is your monthly budget?
  • Would you prefer a rolling monthly contract or something longer?

Once you have an idea of the type of contract you would like, you can start comparing deals using our handy Quidco Compare tool.

What brands offer SIM only contracts?

O2, Three, Vodafone, EE, Lebara, giffgaff, and Tesco Mobile all offer SIM only contracts. Each of these have unique offerings for customers. For example, O2 and Vodafone are known for their generous loyalty apps, offering regular freebies to customers. Whereas giffgaff specialises in low-cost contracts. It all depends on what your needs are and how much you want to spend.

How to get the best SIM only deal

The most obvious way to save money on a SIM only contract is to keep hold of your old mobile. In terms of getting the best deal, Quidco Compare allows you to filter options to match your criteria such as:

  • Monthly cost
  • Data allowance
  • Call and text allowance
  • Preferred network
  • 4G/5G capability

We will then provide you with the top choices available and you can compare each contract and choose the best deal for you. Don’t forget, you’ll also get £12 cashback on top once you receive your new SIM!

What SIM card do I need?

Whether you're keeping hold of your existing handset or purchasing a new mobile phone to go with your SIM, you may be wondering what size card you actually need? There are three main types and sizes available:

  1. Standard SIM card (15mm x 25mm)
  2. Micro SIM card (12mm x 15mm)
  3. Nano SIM card (8.8m x 12.3mm)

Standard SIMs are quite old and rarely used anymore, and Micro SIMs are also used for older models. Most smartphones now work with a Nano SIM card instead. If you're not sure which size you need, don't worry. Many networks and operators send a 3-in-1 SIM card, meaning you can find the perfect size for your phone. If you're still unsure, it's best to check before ordering your SIM.

FAQs

How do I switch to SIM only?

If you're currently on a handset contract, you may have to wait until it ends to avoid any cancellation fees. If your contract has ended, you can start looking around for SIM only deals. However, if you're looking to keep your old phone, you should check if it is unlocked before searching for a SIM only deal on another network.

How do I check if my phone is unlocked?

To check if your phone is unlocked, insert a SIM card from another network and try to make a call. If it connects, your phone is unlocked.

You can also search for different carriers by going to Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Network Operators and tapping Search Now. If you see different provider names, your phone may be unlocked. This strategy works a lot of the time, although it isn't always perfect.

Can I keep my old number on a SIM only contract?

Yes! You can keep your mobile number by asking your old network for a PAC code. You can also use Ofcom’s ‘text to switch’ service by texting ‘PAC’ to 65075 and you’ll get your PAC code via text. Make sure you provide your new network with this within 30 days so they can transfer your number over.

Will I be credit checked for a SIM only deal?

Yes there may be a credit check but the criteria is less strict than a handset contract deal, so you’ll have more chance of being accepted on a SIM only contract.
