When could short-term van insurance be the best option?

Temporary van insurance is the ideal insurance option for a number of everyday situations. These include:

  • Borrowing a van
  • Moving house or helping someone move
  • Transporting large items like furniture
  • Buying a new van

Who can get temporary van insurance?

Temporary van insurance is available to most drivers aged 17-77. As with all insurance policies, there are some restrictions on cover. Some insurers will have limits on penalty points or criminal convictions, so be sure to check the acceptance criteria before purchasing your policy.

What types of vans are covered with short-term van insurance?

We know that a van can mean different things to different drivers. Thankfully short-term van insurance provides cover for a selection of different makes and models.

When getting a temporary van insurance quote, you can choose from the following body types:

  • Van
  • Pickup – single cab
  • Pickup – double cab
  • Box van
  • Luton van
  • Refrigerated/insulated
  • Minibus
  • Hot food dispenser
  • Ice cream van
  • Transit
  • Motorcaravan
  • Taxi
  • Dustcart
  • Horsebox
  • Livestock carrier
  • Milk float
  • Flatbed
  • Mobile shop
  • Tipper truck
  • Refuse vehicle

It’s important you select the right vehicle body type for your vehicle to ensure you get the right policy. If you come to make a claim and the information doesn't match the records of the insurer, your claim may be invalidated.

What type of cover do I get with temporary insurance?

With temporary van insurance, you get comprehensive cover as standard. This means that should you have an accident, you, the vehicle, and any third parties are covered. With short-term van insurance, you are covered for:

  • Loss or damage to the van caused by an accident, fire, vandalism, or theft
  • Accidental and malicious damage to the van
  • Personal belongings within the van (varies with insurers)
  • Third-party claims from someone against you
  • Some policies may also include driving in the EU

There are some things that are not covered under a standard temporary van policy:

  • Additional van drivers
  • Driving other vans in addition to the one you have insured temporarily
  • Loss or damage to any vehicle or trailer that is being towed by the insured van
  • Releasing a van from an impound
  • Any goods carried in or on the van
  • Glass/windscreen damage

Can I use temporary van insurance for business?

Yes, you could use temporary van insurance to insure a new member of staff on a van, when buying new vans for your business or as replacements while being fixed.

If you’re moving items across the country for your business or getting staff to an event.

That being said, there are some aspects of business such as taxiing or hire and reward businesses that are not covered by a temporary van insurance policy.

Pros & cons of temporary van insurance

Pros

  • It works out cheaper, as you only pay for the insurance you need over a certain period
  • If you're borrowing a van, it's often quicker to take out a short-term van policy than getting added to the main driver's policy
  • No cancellation fees, which are sometimes applied to annual van insurance policies
  • Most policies include comprehensive cover in the UK and third-party cover in the EU as standard

Cons

  • If you're using the van a few times across the year, taking out short-term cover every time can work out more expensive
  • If you are a courier or other hire and reward van driver, you may not get cover
  • It could also be more expensive than being added to the main driver's policy

Can I insure my car and van on the same temporary policy?

No, unfortunately, you can’t add multiple vehicles or drivers to the same policy. Each temporary insurance policy is a separate, standalone policy. You can, however, get flexible temporary car insurance for the same duration as any temporary van policy.
