Top 10: What’s new with the iPhone 7
We take an in-depth look into the iPhone 7's new features
Tomorrow, the iPhone 7 will be released to vast fanfare. We’ve seen how it stacks up against the competition, but what are the major new selling points? We know it’s now waterproof (hooray!), meaning you can take it into the shower (if that’s your thing – we’re not here to judge). And we know it’s got a sparkly new camera and improved battery life. All good so far, eh?
Check out the full-range of new features below.
Faster than a speeding bullet
Under the bonnet, you’ll find a new custom-designed Apple processor called the A10. It’s Apple’s fastest ever chip: a quad-core powerhouse that’s 40 percent faster than the chip in the iPhone 6 – and yet gentler on the battery. It’s fast enough to provide a gaming experience similar to what you’d expect from a proper video game console.
Good news for anyone wanting to up their Instagram game: the iPhone 7 is armed with all-new front and rear cameras. Those selfies will be on point. The primary camera has a 12 megapixel sensor that is 60 percent faster, the lens now has a wider aperture and the TrueTone LED flash throws out 50 percent more light. You even get optical image stabilisation as standard (it was previously only on the ’S’ models).
The iPhone 7’s bigger brother, the 7 Plus, features a 5.5-inch display and a simply mind-blowing camera. Well, it’s actually two cameras that shoot as one. The first is the same 12-megapixel wide angle camera on the iPhone 7, the second is a 12 megapixel telephoto camera. That means the 7 plus boasts a 2x optical zoom capable of capturing razor-sharp close-ups.
Super colourful display
Apple has pinched the screen technology from its gorgeous iPad Pro 9.7. The result: the iPhone 7 has a more natural-looking display than ever. Here’s the science: the wider the colour gamut, the better the colour saturation. In short, it means you can shoot video that pops and take ultra-sharp photographs. Apple has even announced that it will calibrate every iPhone 7 before they go on sale, to ensure a picture-perfect display. That’s nice of them.

Improved battery life
Battery life – across all smart devices – remains a crucial consideration for consumers. The last iPhone had a fantastic Low Power Mode that conserved battery, but the iPhone 7 may not need that. Apple does not release specific data about the iPhone’s battery but early indicators suggest that the iPhone 7 could deliver up to two hours extra battery life, which will certainly come in handy when browsing your favourite cashback website
You might not have noticed it at first glance, but Apple has made some exciting – albeit extremely subtle – design changes to the latest iPhone. The ugly plastic channels on the back have been abandoned and there are new colour options: Jet Black and Matte Black. Pre-orders of Jet Black are already off the charts, so it may be a little tricky to get hold of it at launch. Of course, there’s also white, gold and rose gold to consider.
If you purchased the cheapest iPhone 6 with 16GB of memory, you’ll know how quickly the space disappears. It’s incredibly frustrating – particularly when you’re desperately trying to download an app or shoot a video. In recognition of this, Apple has dropped the entry-level 16GB iPhone. Instead, the iPhone 7 range kicks off with a 32GB model, stepping up to 128GB and 256GB models. It’s the first time 256GB has been available on the iPhone, and it’s going to make a huge difference to the user experience.
Hooray! Apple says the new iPhone 7 is so waterproof that it would survive a plunge in a swimming pool. That’s good news for anyone who’s ever dropped their smartphone down a toilet, or into a pint glass, but it’s actually IP67 rated, which – officially – equates to splash and water resistant. It might be best to hold off chucking it into your local swimming pool for now. Fun fact: it’s also dustproof, so should last longer than previous models.
No headphone socket
The rumours were correct: Apple has removed the 3.5mm headphone socket. Instead, music-lovers must pair the iPhone 7 with Bluetooth wireless headphones, such as Apple’s AirPods, or invest in a new pair of headphones designed to plug into the phone’s Lightning port. It may be a divisive feature but it’s bound to inspire some leaps forward in Bluetooth headphone design; certainly no bad thing. Check out the best on the market here.
Futuristic new home button
Another rumour that has proven to be true. Well, partly at least. The iPhone 7 does have a Home button – but it’s not press-able, possibly to ensure that the device is waterproof. On the upside, it’s blessed with Apple’s Force Touch technology. That means the Home button can now detect how hard you’re pressing it and send feedback in the form of vibrations. Why? Apple hasn’t said, but it will likely be for notifications and games.
