How to bid on eBay

Bidding on eBay is easy, and you can pick up some fantastic bargains in an eBay online auction. All you need to do is carefully review the listing that you’re interested in and check similar items on eBay to make sure you get the best offer.

If you like what you see, click the Place Bid button and enter the amount you’d like to bid. Review it, then click the Confirm Bid button if you’re happy to proceed. If you’re outbid at any point during the auction, eBay will send you a notification.

You’ll also be notified when the auction is about to end in case you want to place a last-minute bid on eBay. If you’re the highest bidder at the end of the auction, eBay will send you an email letting you know what to do next.

Are there PayPal fees to pay on eBay?

You can pay on eBay without PayPal, but only if the seller has listed an alternative payment method. If you don’t have a PayPal account to use on eBay, credit card payments are approved but check the seller offers this payment method before committing to a purchase.

Sellers tend to prefer a prompt payment and most only dispatch an item once they’ve been paid, so it’s best to pay as soon as you can. For buyers, it’s free to use PayPal on eBay, so there are no additional fees to pay. However, if you buy from a seller overseas and PayPal has to convert the currency, there will be a small fee.

eBay delivery and postage

It’s up to the seller how they ship an item, so postage options vary from listing to listing. Before buying anything on eBay, check the delivery time on each item and the price of postage.

eBay doesn’t offer its own courier or collection services, but sellers can pick from a range of approved shipping options, including Royal Mail, MyHermes courier service, Collect+, and Parcelforce. Sellers can use eBay’s shipping calculator, the Postage Estimator, so buyers are charged a fair postage fee.

For international postage, most sellers can go through eBay’s Global Shipping Programme (GSP), where eBay helps to track orders and deal with customs clearances.

eBay refunds and returns policy

If the item you bought wasn’t what you expected, or it didn’t arrive, you can contact the seller directly through My eBay within 30 days of the delivery date or the estimated delivery date to try and arrange a refund or to return the item.

My eBay account – how to sign up and get started on eBay

It’s super simple to sign up to eBay. To register on eBay, just enter your name and email address then create a password on the registration page. You’ll also need to confirm that you’re over 18 to buy or sell.

You may need to supply contact details and you may need to confirm that you have a PayPal account. Once you’re set up, you’ll have access to a My eBay account, where you can check your purchase history, watch items, check on bids and, if you’re a seller, keep track of items you’ve listed.

Can I change my details in My eBay?

When you log in to My eBay, you can change or correct your personal information by clicking the Account tab and selecting Personal Information. You can also link PayPal to your eBay account when you sign in to make buying and selling even easier.

My eBay: Summary

When you click Summary on the My eBay dropdown menu, you can see all your recent activity, including the items on your Watch List and anything you’ve viewed.
