Why switch to npower?

Npower's nest protect

You'll be in good company. Millions of UK homes and businesses get their gas and electricity through npower, and the brand is part of innogy, a European group that specialises in energy infrastructure and renewables. You’ll find no hidden costs or complicated tariff changes, just straight up information, along with honest and helpful customer service. The website's easy to use, the contact numbers are freephone, and the call centres are based here in the UK. As for the tariffs, simple doesn't mean one-size-fits-all; there are a few key tariffs that cover different budgets and energy needs. Still not sure? Head to the npower site, where you can read comprehensive guides to all things energy and live chat with the company's own experts. Remember to enter the site through our offer links if you want to earn cashback!

Simple energy tariffs

Shopping around for an energy provider can yield some great savings, but nobody likes the research bit, particularly when providers present you with scores of complicated tariffs and deals. With npower you can cut the waffle. Its simple base tariffs provide you with real choice when it comes to paying for your electricity and gas. Whether you want flexibility, online convenience, peace of mind or control, they have a plan that's suited to you. If you're not sure which tariff is right for you, use the website's quote wizard to find out. Just pop in your postcode and a few other details to see the rates and offers you could get.

Helping you switch

It's a common misconception that switching energy supplier is a big deal. In fact it's almost as easy as flicking a light on or off. As well as helping you choose the perfect plan, npower handles all the red tape and paperwork, arranging a switch date with your old provider and notifying you once the change has taken effect. You can create an online account immediately, and track the progress of your switch in the Welcome Centre – you even get a 14-day 'cooling off' period in case you change your mind. The whole process should be complete within 21 days, with no disruption to your energy supply. Because energy suppliers are keen for you to switch to them, there are often impressive cashback deals to be had on making a change. So our advice is: don't be shy!

Helping you save

If saving cash is your top priority, you'll like this stat: npower crunched the numbers on quotes given to customers joining online, and found that they were being offered savings of on average £220 on annual energy costs. But it isn't all about tariff-level savings. Npower is also on hand with energy saving advice, schemes and products, all of which can help reduce your monthly spend. For instance: find out if you’re eligible for the Warm Home discount, which offers electricity bill rebates for those at risk from fuel poverty; or get set up with an energy monitor, which shows you how much energy you're using each day. For personalised advice, call the Energy Efficiency Helpline, where experts can advise you on anything from new appliance purchases to energy efficiency grants. For the ultimate energy makeover, book a full home survey, which will calculate the energy rating, running costs and carbon footprint of your entire home.

Keeping you warm

It’s 7.00am in the middle of January and you’re rushing to get to work. One slight problem: there’s no hot water or heating. We've all been there, and none of us want to go back. With npower’s ECO scheme, you can find out about discounts and financial help on loft insulation and eco boilers, giving you more reliable, efficient and cheaper energy all year round. Npower has installed thousands of boilers across the UK as part of the government’s Energy Company Obligation scheme – otherwise known as a boiler grant. You can see if you’re eligible for a free or subsidised boiler by filling in an easy-peasy form online, and if you are, your details will be passed onto the right people.

For your business

Looking for an energy provider with strong green credentials to supply your business with gas and electricity? It's always beneficial to be able to demonstrate sustainability, and using renewable power can also help you stay on the right side of Government guidelines around carbon emissions. Bottom line: you need a supplier with a genuine commitment to the environment. At npower you'll find a range of green tariffs and initiatives suitable for businesses, including a pledge to match the power you consume with an equivalent volume of renewable power supplied to the grid. Check T&Cs before you proceed with a switch, as business accounts might not be eligible for cashback offers.

5 ways to make the most of your npower cashback

Green, great value and easy to use too – if you’re looking for a new energy supplier, npower should be one of your first ports of call. But if you’re still not convinced, here are five ways to make the most of a switch to npower…

1. Switch to a dual tariff

If your gas and electricity are currently coming from two different suppliers, you could be paying more than you need to, since you won’t be benefitting from the dual fuel discount offered by major energy suppliers such as npower. You’ll find a great selection of dual fuel tariffs on the website. It's likely you'll save money, and with just one set of bills to deal with you’ll probably find it easier to stay organised too.

2. Go green

We all need to do our bit for the environment. Npower’s green fixed energy tariff means you can match all your electricity and 15% of your gas usage with energy generated from renewable energy sources. Plus you’ll also be feeding the same amount back into the network. As a bonus, and in conjunction with Trees for Cities, npower plants a tree for every green energy tariff customer. You’ll be using lower carbon emissions, and you can bag some cashback when you switch through Quidco too. Beat that for a deal!

3. Get your boiler covered

Don’t be caught out when your boiler packs up – without cover you could be looking at a long wait to get your heating and hot water up and running again, or a hefty emergency callout fee from your plumber. As an npower customer you'll be able to sign up for boiler breakdown cover from Allianz Global Assistance, which offers a 24-hour UK helpline and fixed-price cover for two years. You’ll be able to contact them any time, day or night, and they’ll send an engineer round to do the repair work. Check out the boilers & heating tab for the terms and conditions. Note that cashback might not be available on boiler cover.

4. Install a smart meter

When you switch to npower, you'll also have the option of getting a smart meter. These next-generation gas and electricity meters link up wirelessly to your supplier's network and to an in-home display, so there's no uncertainty over how much energy you're using and no need for estimated bills. In fact, most of the time there'll be no need for meter readings at all, because the data from your smart meter will allow npower to calculate an accurate bill automatically (you might still be asked to submit a reading if there's a problem gathering data, but that's pretty rare). Better still, you can use the in-home display to monitor and tweak your own power usage, seeing at a glance which activities and appliances are most energy-hungry.

5. Upgrade your thermostat

If you want more control over your energy usage without having to do the analysis and planning yourself, you're going to love Nest thermostats. These clever devices learn what you like and automatically create an optimum energy schedule for your home, helping you save power and money. Npower is a Nest partner, and as a customer you'll be able to order one at a discounted rate (though it's worth checking the T&Cs, as Nest purchases might not be eligible for cashback). Just one more way npower can help you stay in control of your energy costs.

Shopping with npower

If you've still got some burning questions about npower, you might well find the answers below. We've rounded up some of the most common queries, including details of house moves and how to arrange a switch.

Can npower help when I’m moving home?

Absolutely. Just go to npower's Moving Home section. The tools there can help you get a quote for your new home, or switch the supply to your name if the property is already supplied by npower. There are also some tools to help landlords manage tenant changes. And it's worth remembering that npower offers an energy efficiency helpline and free home energy surveys – both could be useful as you get set up in your new place.

Who owns npower?

Npower is owned by innogy SE, a subsidiary of the German company RWE, which is an incorporation of Germany’s leading energy companies.

How do I read my npower smart meter?

The top of your smart meter screen shows you how much gas and electricity you're currently using (the green bars show electricity, the blue bars show gas), and how much it is costing you in pounds and pence. Below that is a menu of other options, including a message centre and a demo mode that takes you through key meter functions. If you need to take a manual meter reading for any reason, you can do that under Settings > Advanced Settings.

How do I switch to npower?

Switching is easy. There’s no need to contact your existing supplier as npower will arrange the whole transfer for you. All you need to do is provide an opening reading using an online form. Npower will pass the reading to your current supplier for them to use when closing your account and producing your final bill. You'll get a contract and welcome pack from npower in the post, and then you're good to go.

What does npower stand for?

Wondering where that 'n' came from? It stands for National – npower was originally called National Power.

When will npower increase prices?

Prices do change periodically, but there's no set schedule. If you're concerned about potential price rises, you can protect yourself by going for a fixed tariff, Npower will notify you of price changes in good time, so you'll have enough notice to consider a new tariff if necessary.
