The popular supermarket chain, Asda, was founded in 1949 in Wakefield, Yorkshire. The Asquith family amalgamated their retail business with Yorkshire's Associated Dairies. 

Allied Carpets, 61 major Gateway Supermarkets, and other companies, such as MFI Group, were bought during the 1970s and 1980s, as Asda expanded into Southern England. During the 1990s, it sold these assets to focus on supermarkets.

The retail industry was stunned on 26th July 1999, when Walmart announced its surprise acquisition of Asda. Asda supplied Walmart with a ready-made retailer with ideals that closely matched its own, as it sought a path into the UK market.
